I found reference to a old thread about people's favorite books about sustainable living....but I couldn't find the thread. (I completely admit to being search impaired). I'm really interesting in building up my library on this subject...can anyone point me to the thread, or, can we start another?!? :)

Not a book, Maggie, but I just started subscribing to Mother Earth News magazine & am very impressed. I've dog-eared all sorts of pages in the last 2 issues!

I would add Organic Gardening to the magazine list and anything by Rodale Press to the book list. Rodale publishes OG. They have gardening, canning, farm building, etc books. I also found one about frugal living and finances.
I have also been successful with used books from my Friends of the Library book sales. It's kinda hit or miss though. |

I don't know where the thread went either. It has been up a couple of times. Libbie started it and should know where it is hidden. but where is Libbie? Haven't heard from her in a while. An excellent book that i could relate to is 'Country Women" It tells you how to do most anything. MB

These two aren't books either but are awesome when it comes to homesteading. Countryside magazine and Backwoods Home magazine. A book I like is "Back to Basics". -Elizabeth |

My husband and I actually met through the Countryside magazine. I had written an article which was published in there and he wrote to me. The rest is history! So of course I have to recommend that magazine to everyone! ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif) -Elizabeth |

I love anything by John Seymour. I haven't read as many of his books as I'd like to, as they're a bit hard to find around here (he was British), but Farming for Self-Sufficiency is one of my favorites. I love the way he writes, and admire the way he makes self-sufficiency sound perfectly reasonable, and perfectly achievable.

John Seymour has another book called "The Self-Sufficient Life And How to Live It" which teaches, well just about anything and everything...how to build, grow, process...etc.

Maggie- Little House on a Small Planet- It is THE BEST book about living small that I have found, other green remodeling books etc. seem geared toward people who are building new. This book will make you feel FABULOUS about living in a little home whether it be an apartment, cottage, teepee or farmhouse with a practical emphasis on living simply. Warmly, Rebekka

Reader's Digest: Back to Basics - has a little bit of everything you might want to dabble in. How to buy land, how to build a fence, how to raise various livestock, how to grow food, how to can, spin, dye, make soap... literally everything. Not too deep into each subject, but has lots to whet the appetite and lots of good bibliographical references.
Here's 3 good books on eating locally (more why-to than how-to): "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" (someone already mentioned it), "The Omnivore's Dilemma", "Plenty".
Also, anything by Gene Logdson, he's all about doing the most with the least (especially least effort!).
