Hi....my name is Joe Ann and I live in Texas. My id is txseller because my husband and I buy and sell antiques and collectibles and hold estate sales in our area. My weakness is old buttons and old paper dolls and his weakness is old advertising (signs, clocks, etc.) and our collections have just about squeezed us out of our house. I have so many buttons and paper dolls that I've started selling some of them online at Ruby Lane in our "shop" called Lankford's Collectibles. My problem is trying to decide what to sell and what to keep! I want them all!!
I also love sewing but had rather make curtains, pillows, lap quilt throws, and baby items than clothes. I have so many projects started it makes me blush. My motto: they'll be finished one day!
I have just found this site and already love it.

Welcome JoeAnn!
Sounds like you & your DH have a fun partnership. Paper dolls & buttons are a lot more portable than antique furniture, I bet my DH would love for me to switch!
Enjoy the forum, lots of like-minded collectors and sewing mavens here.

welcome, JoeAnn. I am a newcomer as well and am feeling quite at home here. Do you make projects with the buttons? Display them? Let us know! I love collections, and am interested in what and how folks do with theirs. I collect old kitchen wares and make wind chimes out of them. Not the silverware chimes, but the whole kit and kaboodle. Cups, blade sharpeners, can openers, whisks, shakers, you name it. They are big and fun and actually when i put in the right cup and clapper, they make wonderful tones! Then I sell them and have to collect more, which is the most fun part. I have to look up your store on ebay, and see what you have. How fun. Jenny |

Welcome, Joe Ann! I'm a newer member, too. I loved hearing about your business, & am going to take a look @ what you have @ Ruby Lane. I've always loved old paper dolls. As a little girl, I so enjoyed playing with my Mother's old paper dolls from the early 1930s. Looking forward to chatting some more...... Melanie |

Jenny, You asked about what to do with old buttons. One VERY simple thing I've done with a few of mine is glue a magnet on the back. Voila! Instant fridgie.

I love buttons too. I just made a bracelet for a friends daughter that turned out cute. You definetly fit in. A lot of crafty gals here, in the good sense. Welcome Joe Ann!

Welcome Joe Ann, I'm sure you're going to fit right in with our "little" group here. It sounds like you have a fun business (obsession)going on with your husband. I also love paper dolls, but unfortunatly don't have any. I wish I could find the set of baby dolls that I had as a child. I made little beds for them out of a gift box and tissue paper. I still remember those dolls. |

Welcome Joe Ann, you are just one day newer than I am to this group! I inherited a big jar of my great-grandma's buttons a few years ago and they have come in handy for so many crafty projects. I hot glued a bunch of white, pearly, and neutral-colored ones to a cheap 3X5 picture frame and it turned out great! I have yet to actually use one to replace a missing button on a piece of clothing though! :) |

I'm new, too! Where in Texas are you? I'm a Texan who transplanted myself to Northern New Mexico (couldn't take any more hot and humid Gulf Coast weather) about 4 years ago. I sew a lot, too, mostly quilting projects...small quilts, throws, table runners. I have fond memories of Mom pulling out old pattern books when we were kids and home sick from school. We had to stay in bed, but we were allowed to make paper dolls from the pictures of the models and clothes from the pattern pages. I don't collect old buttons but have a great appreciation of them and wish, oh how I wish, I had inherited some of my grandmother's stash. That dear woman never threw away a scrap of fabric or a button or a piece of thread in all her 70+ years. I was fortunate to have an aunt inherit the fabric and she has shared a few precious pieces of it which I'm incorporating into a semi-star pattern quilt using old 1930 reproduction fabrics, the pieces from my grandmother, and some pieces recently given to me by my stepmother from the stash of a step-great-aunt quilter who recently passed away. It will be a very special quilt to me when I get it finished. Welcome! |
