I am still battling the weight thing. Ever since I was given Prednisone for anaphylactic shock about 2.5 years ago my body is different and seemed to have bulked up and I can't return to how I used to be. My forearms and calf muscles are bulkier and tend to stay that way and I have fat where I didn't used to. I gave up on weight watchers because I had to track online and my scheduled doesn't allow it. I think I'll make sure to eat a salad or two a day. I'm drinking more water etc. I am only 25 and never had children I don't know I'm a lil down about the weight and body. Any help tips or guidance. I'm exercising and walking lately but man. :-B

Bridget. Well, you know on some level Pred is a steroid and so it's not your fault if you get bulked up on some level, if it's affecting your system still. Please don't be down on yourself! I know it's hard, I used to weigh 220 as a teen and young person and it's a vicious cycle thing, where you get depressed about your weight and then eat more. Is there a way to contain proportions? I find that I was usually not hungry, but just wanted "something to munch on" and so instead I would chew gum. It would help, I would eat less. Also, though, don't starve yourself, or you will get crazy and then want to eat everything for the next meal. I also cut out red meat (well, I ended up cutting meat out altogether) and exercise using weights and resistance because that helps build muscle, which helps burn fat.
I don't know if any of this helps, but feel free to PM me if you'd like. Keep your chin up!

Honestly!! Go vegan!! I'm 49 and weigh less than in high shool!! Read the book Skinny B***** by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. They now have Skinny B*** in the Kitch which is the best, yummiest cookbook EVER!!! Its soooo easy to be vegan now!! And I eat and love my food! But the weight really fell off quite easily and I didn't feel deprived! I felt very empowered! Not only was I helping myself, but all animals and the planet! hugs and love and best wishes to you mon amie!!!!!

Bridget, I'm sorry you had to go on Prednisone. I was on it for a couple years because of Lupus. I fixed that by changing my diet to organic or as natural as I can afford so I have been off the Prednisone and other meds for two and a half years myself. I too have been trying to lose weight unsuccessfully. I am a very active outdoorswoman and I watch what I eat, but so far, nothing has happened for me either. It is very disheartening but I'm told it can take up to five years for the effects of that drug to wear off. So I continue to work at it and keep hoping that it will take less than five years.
I know how you feel and it's very hard to look at the clothes you love in the closet that you STILL can't wear. But keep plugging away and keep active; it will catch up. The last thing you want to do is add any more weight; making it even more difficult to lose it by the time the drug effects wear off. Keep your spirits up and don't give up.

Thanks you all, I checked out Skinny $#$% hehe it was interesting. I don't know I'm still a lil on the old fashioned side for loving dairy and eggs...meat not so much. Lisa I'm so sorry you had to be on that for so long. It's pretty nasty. I was only on it for a week but i was not tapered off and it was so weird the way my body took to it, but if I hadn't had that I'd have died. Soo it is rough. I just really saw a change in my body after it. lately I've put on a few extra pounds. I can see where it has gone, boobs and hips....I've been trying to lose it and watch what I eat and be active oh well. Like you said keep plugging away. oy

I didn't taper off either. I just got mad one day and threw all the drugs away! Probably stupid on my part but I guess I just lost my temper out of frustration. I don't know that tapering off would have made any difference with me anyway. The damage was already done. But I FEEL better even if I don't LOOK better so, that was what really mattered.
You know what? My dog, Girlie Girl, was on Prednisone after she was hit by a car 4 years ago and it did the same thing to her. She is just losing the weight now. I noticed yesterday that she's getting her figure back. And she has NOT been active at all. And she's 11 years old; no spring chicken. So, if it can happen for her it can happen for us!

Bridget- I have really struggled with my weight my whole life. I have been as high as 280 lbs. It is hard, especially when you have medical issues getting in the way (I did too) and people just think you eat too much or are lazy.
I had a tough time after my son was born. He is almost 2 now and I just lost my first 20 lbs over the past few months. I have quite a bit to go but I am taking my health back slowly. I got off the meds and got my head right and literally locked out anyone in my life who wasn't going to be positive towards me. That has helped a lot.
Just make sure you are eating healthy, something that works for you.
Cheers, Heather

Well........like I said, I really did change the way I eat. We have always been good about healthy eating but I never did have any idea about portion control. So, I think the main thing was to get that under control. I started writing down everything that I ate to get a real picture, it was an eye opener for sure! Then, I started making changes, little by little I did get the meat out of our diet and I do think that was a big thing for both my husband and myself. I don't even think about eating it anymore. I think you lose that part of you "taste" kind of like you do with sugar if you don't eat it for a long time, you just don't think about it anymore.
Also, I joined a gym. I have bad knees so walking (which I loved to do) was out of the question. It was no fun at first but now I go everyday and workout for about 1hr. I also take classes in pilates and yoga and love that!
I think when it comes down to losing weight, we all know what we have to do to get it off, it's just getting up the steam and deciding....THAT'S ENOUGH! It's a mental thing and one day it just clicks! I do hope that it clicks for you Bridget, I feel so good about myself right now that if there was ANY way I could share it with you I would! I'm sending you "farmgirl" positive thoughts and I know you will feel them all the way from Nevada!!
If there is anything I can do for you...just let me know! Hugs, Cindy

Hey I also went vegetarian and it helped me lose weight, too. I think if you make your work outs fun (dancing, rollerskating, swimming, etc) so that you don't feel like your doing MONOTONOUS WORK while you're working out, it helps too. I think also, Cindy is right..writing down what you eat is helpful because alot of eating happens in a mindless sort of way, munching on too many snacks, etc.
Good luck, we are rooting for you!

The best tip I've ever heard was to write each and EVERY thing that you eat...even if it was a little Hershey kiss. You will begin to realize what you are eating that is wrong. Share that journal with your doctor. Remember, you can't expect miracles overnight. You are taking great first steps to living a healthier life.

I am down 16 lbs since the 13th. I eat lots of veggies (of the low carb variety) cheese, eggs, and meat. I don't feel deprived of anything and I feel great. I drink lots of water too. I haven't given up anything that wasn't good for me to begin with.
