I went out to feed my horses this morning and my black quarter horse mare Checkers was standing up away from everyone. She is the head horse so that was unusual. I went up to her and could hardly get her to move, I think she is foundering. We have been having a lot of trouble finding hay here this winter and I have gotten several loads of different types of hay as that was all I could get. Anyway, I had to change hay the other day and didn't have much of the old stuff left to mix in. I think this is what cause the problem. My farrier came out and looked her over and will be back on Monday but any suggestions on other things to do would be great. My vet told me to bute her so I am, 2 grams 2x a day for now. If only she could tell me for sure whats wrong. Thanks.

Take her off grain if you think she's foundering. The bute will help with inflamation.

Hopefully she is feeling better and she jsut had an off day.

Would you! That would be great. She is walking better, but it sure would be good to know for sure what is going on with her. I hate having a sick animal child, as I usually end up sick to my stomach and with a migraine. I come from a long line of worriers.

Kathy,
we are having problems getting hay here also do to the drought. Many of the people around here are adding beet pulp to help fill in the fiber gaps. They soak it in warm water and mix it with there grain. I know my girlfriend is having good results with it and her horses like the way it taste. I don't know how much that would help you but it might help keep her regular. Ask you farrier what he thinks. Hope you baby is okay. Good luck.

Just an update...The mare is doing well, pretty much back to her old self. I guess I need to try to get some weight off her before spring. I think I will take blood and have her thyroid etc tested to make sure there isn't something wrong there. A big THANKS to Utahfarmgirl for chatting with the kids. (We had a wicked weather weekend with -50 windchills so I have not been spending much time outside with Misty so I hope she understands) Thanks to everyone for keeping Checkers in your thoughts.

Wooo hooo!! Horsie doing better! You're welcome, Kathy, and call me if you need me. Send Misty some love (pink light) and she'll be fine.

Glad your horse is doing better. Patricia, I wonder if you can talk to an animal who has already passed to find out how she died? I have a sneaky suspicion my poor dog Mesa was poisoned, but we didn't have an autopsy done on her, so we'll never really know how she died.

I'd rather live my life with a "full plate" than an empty one. Life is not a rehearsal... eat up!
