Very sad drive home from work today. One of my very favorite farms has a great big sign out front: "For Sale - 80 Acres." Then, just about a mile down the road, another sign: "For Sale - 60 Acres." 'Bout broke my heart.
I'm guessing St. Johns will have another big box store, chain restaraunt, or housing development full of McMansions before long. |

So sad- I really wish I could have a tangible way of stopping this from happenning. It is so sad. When there is no land left, then what? When our farms are gone and we are eating genetically altered, man made food, then what? When the open space we used for open air are gone, then what? I am not a doom and gloom person, but I think at some point, the environment is going to tip just too far and it will be disaster.

Girls I think like that to It broke my heart to see my grandparents farm sold but when goverment decides they want it they can get it, I am so glad we have a big farm so far back in the boonies we probably wont have to worry about it for a long while

It is so sad to see country land up for sale, farm or just land. You know darn well that it will have some building setting on it or another housing tract and all the wildlife will be displaced. Nature is so beautiful just left alone or in a farmers hands. Some have stopped the invasion of super stores,a lot of people in Vermont have done that. I wonder how they stop it? Out here a lot of people are trying to stop the wind power from coming in here. Not right here but about 15 miles from here. I am not really sure if that is a good or bad thing. Anyone know anything about the wind power? windmills??

Over in Lexington, they have the Purchase of Development Rights program. Basically the government will pay a farmer to NOT develop their farm. They have a ton of people that sign up and only a selected amount gets chosen. Basically it is an easement saying you will not sell it to developers. They also have the Bluegrass Conservancy and several other groups in Kentucky that help out with this. The money isn't as much as what you would get from a developer, but at least you know that land will stay agriculture over the years.

| MaryJane, if you're in a researching mood you might want to look up Somerset, Pennsylvania, on the internet to see about their wind program. We used to drive by there on the Turnpike all the time, and the windmills there are awesome to look at - huge! The electricty produced there is actually what they use to power the Statue of Liberty. |

Hey Jessica, I also hear there are land conservation programs in several areas. It's similar to what you are talking about, and they work with the farmer to keep the land.
I hope the government gets it through their thick heads that they are losing part of this country's HERITAGE when they make it so a farmer cannot keep LAND. Greedy developers are, in my opinion, the downfall of the country as they have no respect for property in any other capacity than to cut it up. IT's really sad, that is true :(

This topic has been very hot at our place right now. There is a "mystery" person buying up farms left and right all around our area. All we know is it's a numbered company (and the rep only tells you his first name). They have even approached my husband, about another place he owns (with another relative), and my husband is interested, for the right price. Everyone here is selling out to them, especially the older folks, as they're offering big money and they (the older farmers) know they'll never see that kind of offer again in their lifetime. I don't want to see the place go, but he says if we ever do sell our place to them, we'll buy another farm. We have opposing viewpoints to all this, but I can't let it become a marriage issue (believe me it has potential to do this, too).
I know others who have stood firm, and refused offers for their farms, and are now surrounded by development and regret it.
By the way, the beautiful farm across the road that used to have Belgian horses was sold this summer and is going to be turned into a golf course. Also, the elderly lady next door sold her 100 acre farm to the mystery people. All involved are sworn to secrecy. Makes me wonder what's really going on...
(sigh) Progress...
