I admit it, I'm a 'little' vain about my hair. I love my long layered look (which a young hairdresser told me that I was stuck in the '80's). So I have lost track of my regular haircutter and have taken a chance the last two times with different cutters.
What a mess is all I can say. It's a good thing my hair is long-ish and I can hide the whack-job. I have told the ladies how to cut it, it's really not hard but they do the opposite and once the hair is off, what do you do?? They cut before I can say something to stop them.
The next time I'm going to micromanage the cutter or either I'm going to have to learn to cut it myself. I've tried cutting it myself but in the mirror I get it backwards and my arms don't move or fit 'thataway'.
Well, at least thanks for letting me vent!!

Yikes. Bad haircuts...we've all had 'em. I popped into one of the national chains once for a trim. My hair was pretty short but had grown out for a while, so I asked that she take it up about an inch. About ten minutes later the stylist in the next chair looked at me, gasped, and said to my stylist, "She said take an inch OFF!" The woman cutting my hair thought I said, "About an inch long." Yep, the hair right on the top of my head was an inch long. There wasn't anything to do but finish cutting it super short. I spiked it with gobs of gel, and people thought I had turned punk. Took me three years to grow it out to a reasonable length again. |

Wow...I didn't know long and layered translated into stuck in the 80s. Oh well! Give me blue eye shadow and I guess I'll be set! I got my hair cut today (which is naturally curly and comes to the middle of my back). I, too, have suffered some super awful cuts. I used to have short hair and after one lady cut it so short that I didn't even need to comb it out (which was NOT the look I was going for), I started growing it back out. I wish I could cut my own hair!

I am growing out my hair too. I love how you tell them to trim off 1/8th of an inch, and you walk out with two painstakingly grown out two inches less. I explained to her that I am growing it out and need it to be long enough to do something with it for a wedding this November. Two inches later, she was "all done". Thank God my hair grows kinda fast, so I can make up for some of it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
I sat in my car and cried for a few minutes. ![](icons/icon_smile_sad.gif)

My hair too is my vanity point. I have a stylist that I love also after many years of bad cuts after my last one left for greener pastures. I have learned that the chains is where most of the young and new stylist go for first jobs or the older stylist when they are tired of dealing with their own rented chair and business side of the profession. My hair now is almost to the middle of my back layered and dyed. It costs me a pretty penny and I too save to get the pampering. I have been thinking of cutting it to my shoulders but that's 5-6 inches and it's scary. Also would require much more fussing and maintenance. I'm the put it in a ponytail and go. Thought about not dying but I'm not ready for the yucky Grey that my hair is. So I'll save and hold out as long a possible before I go to have it done. I hope March comes soon! ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

The last bad haircut I had was when I was 4/5. That dumb cut around the face and it looked BAD, what was my mum thinking?! I have had some not so great sorta uneven but my hair is long so you can't tell. I like when someone takes their TIME with my hair. It's long thick and fine. 3 things that you have to really work at.

Winona, I am sorry to hear about the bum cut. I am a licensed hairdresser, for 20 years now, but not actively doing it for a living just nursing fulltime. I am really thinking about starting it back up as I am trying hard to get out of nursing, the night shifts and weekends and 12 hour shifts are killing me. I also have all of my equipment and the room to put in a salon. After reading this I feel more of an urge to go ahead with my plans. I at one time had a great following of some of the best clients you could ever imagine. But being a Gemini I grew tired of it too....
I have had my share of bad hair cuts but my daughters are always happy as they have never allowed anyone else to touch their hair, I am not so lucky. I also hate to pay for a cut. go figure..
I do believe that if you are a hairdresser for the creative/ aim to please reasons, and yes they can work together, that the hairdresser will do everything in their power to listen to the client and come to an understanding on what is expected in the end. If you feel the client is "stuck in the 80's" so be it, you make subtle sugestions but you do not change the style without her approval. At least I hope I have never done that to anyone. I am sure I have not pleased every client who sat in my chair but I sure have tried to.
I had a very difficult client that was sent to me as sortofa joke because she was such a powerful and demanding lady. She worked as a general rep for GM and was calling on a local Chevy dealership that a friend ran and he thought it was funny when she asked if she could get "A good haircut this side of Detroit" so he sent her to me. After a very lengthy consultation I began cutting and maybe a quarter way thru she wheeled around and grabbed my hand and demanded I stop. I laid my shears down, blood boiling but I remained calm, She said "You obviously did not understand what I want or else you would not be doing the cut this way". I said " please tell me one more time what it is that you want" she did and I explained that I understood her the first time and she could leave or let me finish. She let me finish and she loved it and she came to me in Va from Detroit every 6 weeks for 2 years. I was always intimidated by her but she loved her cut.
So I guess you will have to try to talk it up more and let her know without a doubt what you want or find someone new who is willing to work with you. Coming to Va anytime soon?????
All farmgirls look really cute in a John Deere cap anyway!!!!!
Better luck, Farmgirl Hugs, Becky

Sorry Winona.
I am from Rogue River OR. I am wondering where you went. There is a lady named Sandy in Rogue River, OR, by the laundromat that I'm sure would be happy to give you what you want.

I always take pics to my hairdresser, it seems to help with the communication issue. Next time you get a hair cut you love, take pics from front side and back. Then next time you go you will have something to show them. I also have long layered hair, The 80's are back!

Thanks for the support!!
One_dog...I'll remember your advice and look for her the next time I need a cut...but it might be a while...*sigh* (again)...hehehe...I haven't gone anywhere really. I go thru needing to 'talk' on the net all the time to not wanting to even turn the puter on, get kind of burned out and that's where I am right now. Do some reading but not much posting. :-)

The long, layered cut is the easiest to do yourself. I haven't been to a salon in over a year since I started cutting my own hair.
Bend over at the waist and brush all of your hair forward. Gather your hair in a "low ponytail" in front of your face. Snip the ends straight across as much or as little as you like.
Perfect layers every time!
