I personally give gifts that I make for every occasion. Weddings, baby showers, b-days, housewarming, etc. When I give the gift I always include some business cards and make sure I have plenty to give to the people who say they love it. I also made sure to email everyone and their brother when I opened my shop and started my blog. It also helped to generate customers.
I personally have not had time to try this yet, but if you have the time and talent try writing articles for publications.
I'm sure others have better ideas then mine though!

Be generous. Hand out samples. Give as gifts.
Market things for the visual appeal. Make 'em cute! Labels, websites, etc.
I get three or more orders after each freebie I give out. People shaare and talk abou things they like. Generates interest.

| sometimes your local red cross, or maybe american cancer society (for examples) will run charity events like a fashion show with a silent auction. if you can find out about them as soon as they're advertising selling tickets and offer to donate something.....put your business cards in it..... you can use it as a tax write-off and i know that when i've seen things that i like, i will go and look up the store. |

Business cards, doing local art shows, and another idea that has really helped business is having a myspace promoting my photography. I keep it professionally looking & make sure that some of my friends are local art groups to help promote it. If you need help on doing one, just send me a message and I don't mind to help. It's the best "free" advertising.
* Having a website to show your work and keeping it up to date and professional looking helps.
* Offer "gift certificates" as presents or provide a gift pack as a door prize or silent auction item for a local charity....oh I see Sue mentioned that too.
* Show photos of your items "in action" and different uses for them.
* For Business Cards...I HIGHLY suggest getting them printed at a print shop. They look so much better than on a home computer and it shows you are professional. If you know someone that is creative on designing business cards, use them to help design yours.
* Partner with a friend on "group" packages with your items. Kinda like peanut butter and jelly..if they naturally fit together, put them together.
* Host a "trunk show" with a local merchant of your goodies.

As an animal communicator, I do a LOT of charity work. I will read all day at an event and give all the money to the charity - but my cards and flyers are all over the place. Many people who get a free reading come back as paying customers and recommend me to their friends. I have also been donating half hour readings as silent auction prizes for years.
Generosity works wonders.
