Did you have a song sung at your wedding? or what song did you and your husband dance to as your first dance? or were you at a wedding and heard a really neat song done?
I've been asked to sing at another wedding, my cousin's this time, and I need to come up with a list of songs for her to choose one for me to sing. I've done some searches but I wanted to see if any of you might have some neat ones I haven't considered yet. Plus, I think it's interesting to see what others have done on their big day :)

At Last by Etta James. Hands down my favorite love song, and stops me in my tracks whenever I hear the opening bars of music. That's what we danced to...
My husband is a singer/songwriter and at the time of our wedding played in 3 bands, so those bands were our entertainment. It was pretty great. He played music for the rest of the reception which is what he really likes to do and I got to visit with all the family and friends. We had a U2 type Irish band, we had a blues band and we had a Velvet Underground type band to entertain everyone....

At our wedding I had recorded 'The Rose' to be played during our candlelighting service. That's one of my husband's favorite songs and one that I've performed at quite a few weddings. 'When You Say Nothing at All', 'Annie's Song', and 'Evergreen' are some others that I get asked to do as well.
Oh, I just remembered another one! It's an oldie, but a goody.... 'We've Only Just Begun'.

I forgot to add, during the ceremony, we had a quartet (also friends) and they played selections of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and we had an Irish friend sing acapella, a song of his choosing, "She Moves Through the Fair" in gaelic and in english. Then the ceremony began.
I don't know why I forgot that (probably because I was upstairs putting on finishing touches and really didn't hear much of it :))

I had my flower girls and bridesmaids walk in to Badineire, and I walked into Canon in D. Doug and I danced to Eve 6's "Here's to the Night" since that has always been "our" song.
When we first started dating, he was a college boy and I was a HS senior. He was in town for a semester due to recovering from surgery. But as the new semester rolled around, he returned to college. That song just really seemed to fit our relationship, and I remember falling asleep wearing a tee-shirt that had his cologne on it and listening to that song (ahh High School Drama! lol).
So there really wasn't another song that we could dance to.
By the way- dancing on grass in High Heels is tricky!!

My husband and I danced to Have A Little Faith in Me, a John Hiatt Song (I think it was recorded by Bonnie Raitt too)
"When the road is long, and you can no longer see, let my love throw a spark, baby, and have a little faith in me."
Bonnie Raitt's "Feels Like Home" is beautiful too. "The Dimming of the Day" from the YaYa Sisterhood is lovely. or a Louie Armstrong tune "My one and only love"
Thankful not the typical wedding stuff you heard a every wedding since 1973.
I wasn't born in a barn, but I was raised in one. |

See this is an amusing subject to me and my mother. I am not engaged etc but I do dream like any woman about her wedding day. We actually play piano/organ for weddings so you see it all. I pretty much can't stand the usual tunes (some mentioned here) because of the repeat kill of them being a musician. I will definitely have Etta James At Last (Jonni I agree) it is one that just makes me melt and feel warm and fuzzy. Then there are different ones that are not typical but darn it I can't even think of them now. For my mums wedding she had different tunes as well:)

we didn't have a "normal" wedding and thus hired no band or dj and did no dancing. Our song, however is "When You Say Nothing At All" by Alison Krauss and Union Station. I love all versions of it, but I love hers the best, as she is my most favorite singer ever. It has been 'our song' since we were something like 15....long long time!

Our song was "Could Not Ask For More" By Sarah Evans. Hubby danced with his mom to "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler and I danced with my dad to "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. We also had Canon in D, "Everything" by Lifehouse, and "I Do" by Mark Wills.

Our wedding wasn't typical, either. We got married in the law office where I work (it's from 1867 and stunning) and then we all walked down the two blocks in a large procession to the Irish pub where Jus and I met, and his band played every Thursday night where we had our reception.
We didn't have mother's dances or anything like that because my father's gone and I have two mother in laws, and two father in laws...
Justin is a singer, so he sang U2's "All I want is You", and the Rolling Stones "You can't always get what you want" and it was very fitting for a reception...."I saw her today at the reception, glass of wine in her hand..."
Gosh. It's been 8 years!!!!

I have no idea what music was played during our ceremony, I am sure it was your everyday wedding songs, played by a couple on violin and cello. I don't think I even waited for them to start playing my song before I went down the aisle I was so excited.
At our reception, our first dance was to Chantal Kreviazuk's "Feels Like Home". My dad and I danced to "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson. Not your typical father-daughter song, but it was just right for us.
This was a fun topic!
Good luck at the wedding, Elizabeth! |

Aww I love the fact that a lot of folks used Alison's "When You say nothing at all." She is my all time hands down favorite female singer. I remember when she use to sing with the Cox Family.
15 minutes before the ceremony, I had selected songs from a cd called "Kentucky Memories" that was instrumental bluegrass/folk to play. Those songs included "My Rose of Old Kentucky", "My Old Ky Home", "Blue Moon of Ky", and "Kentucky Waltz". Right before everything during the candle lighting stuff - "In My Dreams" - Josh Turner Parents walked out to "Flowers of Edinburgh" - Pete Huttlinger My bridesmaids walked out to "Looking in the Eyes of Love" - Alison Krauss. I walked out to the traditional wedding march thingie "Here comes the bride...." Our song during the wedding was "Let Me Be Your Man" - Brian McComas. We walked out as hubby and wife to the instrumental "Kentucky Thunder" - bluegrass tune.
We wanted something different and unique. We had a simple country wedding in the church I grew up in.

Yep - I'm a bluegrass nut too. I did a lot of research and stuff during college a few years ago. I had the wonderful time getting to interview some great musicians at festivals and doing photography. I should try to dig that out. The KY Thunder tune was an instrumental that was on that Ky Memories cd. It was a really fun song and I think all of us wanted to dance coming back down the aisle. It's a good "driving" song.

Fun topic! Our wedding song was "Battle Hymn of Love." Anybody recall that? It was Jan. 12th 1991. Yep, 17 blissful years ago. My husband sang "For You" at our reception. Gosh, I'm fogetting what we had our first dance to. I'l have to ask him. Or watch the video! |

Jonni Don't know if you follow ice skating at all, but this past season, the Canadian ice dance team of Dubreuil & Lauzon (who are a couple on & off the ice) skated to Etta's At Last for their free dance. The program was based on being the end of wedding reception(at last) & he skated with his bow tie untied & she was in a magnificent vintage type cream dress. They are gorgeous.. (but sadly now retired) Loved it.. |

Thank you all for sharing about your weddings! It's fun to hear what others have done and to get ideas that I might not have thought about.

I'm all for different ones so if you happen to think of any that you've played I'd love to know what they were. At my brother's wedding I sang one that I don't think is a typical one, "There Is Love"-not typical where I come from anyway, and I'm going to offer that as an option because I know it works well with my voice but they just got married in July so I don't know of my cousin will want to use it.

Oh a song I just thought of is Chuck Wick's "Stealing Cinderella." That is just a beautiful song.
One big suggestion...for the "us song" during the wedding, keep it short. You are standing up there for a while and it can get a little tiring standing there. The song we played during the ceremony during our vows, we faded out after the chorus. I've been to some weddings that the song made me really sleepy.
Have you seen the Youtube videos of the first dances of different couples? I've seen a few that danced to "Thriller" (Michael Jackson), to a few other songs. They are pretty funny!

The worst execution of a song that I remember was at my cousins wedding (it was, sadly, Annie's song, only sung acapella and in a screeching soprano...It was this big to-do where they pulled up in a horse drawn carriage, and this lady from their church sang ALL of their music (it was required). My Grandma Helen, who was just like a little bird, wore hearing aids, and leaned over to me during this neverending song and said with MUCH mischief in her beautiful bright eyes, "I'm turning her OFF!!!" and with that she turned down her hearing aid!!!!!
I snorted and everyone turned around to look at us...the poor lady was really terrible

Jonni - I just snorted just thinking about someone saying that. That is hilarious!!! The best wedding memory was at one of our great uncle's wedding that was outside. Well he was marrying a woman who was a few years older than him. When the preacher said "is there anyone here that objects?" my brother shouted "She's too old for him!" We were little kids and it was on the wedding video too.
