Over the years I have searched for the perfect rocking chair. I love ole chairs that have a history and are handmade. Cracker Barrel has comfy chairs, but they are all the same. I finally found the best rocking chair today as Wilma and I were going through stuff. She told me she had a chair for me but I never imagined the beauty of it! It has handmade and was owned by a lady by the name of Miss Edith Pennington, a retired teacher from Randolph, Kentucky. It was handmade by her father back many many years ago. She was 86 years old when she died about 3 years ago. She was loved by everyone in Metcalfe County here. Learning about the story and seeing the work in this chair, you know a lot of love went into it. The back and seat are handwoven with hickory and is in wonderful condition. I was just amazed by the age that it looked so good! It is packed in my car and ready to roll to its new home. I called my hubby and told him to clear out this particular spot in my living room to place it. I have the perfect quilt made by my great grandma to put across the arm or on the back for it. When I get it home and set up, I'll take a photo and post it up on my blog.

Oh how wonderful! That sounds perfect - you have the history and all!

We have a special rocker, too.....it belonged to my hubby's grandma. He remembers sitting on her lap in it when he was a lttle boy, and he is 58. I love it because the oak wood has turned dark most everywhere but on the tips of the arms, where she always rested her hands....and it rocks so well. Enjoy your new treasure. I can hardly wait to see it in your photo.

I am a big Kentucky history fan and love hearing the "story behind" stuff. I found some very old Kentucky books that I have heard about over the years while we were going through stuff today. I'll post a photo when I get the chair set up when I get home.

I'm so happy for you, Jessica! I too love the history behind objects--my mother has a small rocking chair that was made by my Great Great Uncle for his wife in the 1900's. She was very small, and all chairs were made too large for her to rock her newborn, so he made her a very tiny, very simple chair that we cherish. I know you will do the same!!!!

Oh Jessica, can't wait to see that rocker! I love items with personal histories behind them too. That was so nice of Miss Wilma finding it for you.

Nancy - you won't believe this. Wilma just gave me a miniature rocking chair that came from the same place as the big rocking chair that was in her collection. I will have to sit one of her small dolls that are too cute in it! Oh and wait until you see my little children's ironing board!! I love it!! My aunt Wilma does spoil me at times. I love these items with real meaning and history behind them.

Yep - I sure am lucky!! I just got home from our adventures. One of my neighbors saw me getting out the rocking chair and went "you are not getting old, why you need that?" Then when I showed it to her she went "Oh my that is a beautiful antique!" I told her the story about it. She loved the little dolls that I got as well.

I've got to get supper ready for hubby and then later tonight I'll post up photos. :)
