So, the post yesterday with the Vanilla Ice theme had me thinking about those songs that we sing and don't exactly get the words right. It is just one of the many songs that I sing, but don't really know. The line about "watch me jump like a candle"....yeah, I knew it wasn't right, but I sing, "Wax a chump like a candle". So thanks, Julie, for clearing that one up.
Last summer my aunt, cousin, and I were lounging around the pool listening to the stereo when Gwen Stefani's song "Holler Back Girl" came on, and my aunt sang Hollow Fat Girl. We laughed, but that is really what she thought the words were.
I know that I have many more songs like that, but I'll have to think about them to come up with more examples. My husband is the king of this art, he literally gets probably 10% of the words right, then makes up the rest.
So are any others out there lyrically challenged? |

When I was a little girl, I would belt out the lyrics to Kenny Rogers, "You Picked a Fine Time to Leave me Lucille", and the chorus being, "you picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille, Four Hundred Children and a crop in the field...." I thought they had an orphanage--like the little old woman who lived in a shoe?
The little girl that I used to babysit, Jill, loved country music, and we would listen to Trisha Yearwood's first album...Jill LOVED the song "She's in Love with the Boy" and would sing loudly with her little Henderson, Kentucky rubberband accent, "She's in luv mickaboy, She's in love mickaboy...."
I always had to leave wherever she was singing because I didn't want to burst out laughing and make her self conscious!!!
In my later years, I listened to a lot of REM and could NEVER understand Michael Stipe's lyrics, so I just made up my own. I still sing their songs that way, too!!!

All I can think of from the book is one that isn't PG for here "wrapped up like a (feminine product for cleansing) another (male function) in the night" You get the picture. Someone actually heard that. Oh and Benny and the Jets "She's got electric boobs her mom has two I know I read it in a magaziiiiine"

this is a funny topic! My daughter used to think Little River Band was "Little Rubber Band". When I was little, I thought "my country, tis of thee" was "my country 'Tisabe'". The funniest misunderstanding in our family wasn't a song but here it is anyway. When our daughter was about 5, my dh had to travel to Miami on business. He told the kids he was going to Miami and he'd be back in a week. One day while he was gone, my daughter came up and said "Mommy, when is daddy coming back from his ami?" Took me awhile but I figured out where that was coming from!

Oh my gosh Jeannie! I am a huge Carol King fan, listened to her since high school! That line always made me raise an eyebrow too! I thought SURELY that's not what she meant! LOL Glad to know I'm not alone.

My isn't exactly PG either but it turns out that way. I've always been really cautious of lyrics around my girls when they were little, well, I thought I was. Anyway, I'm a great Jimmy Buffet fan, but I would try to skip some of the more umm "informational" songs. I missed one. The line goes "Lets get drunk and _______(driver?)."
But one Christmas my mom bought me the movie "Scrooge" with Albert Finney. If you know the version, the Ghost of Christmas Present gives Scrooge wine and he gets silly singing. Putting the two together as only little kids can do, the lyrics became "Lets Get Drunken Scrooge!"
I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon |

When our boys were very small they listened to tapes with bible/praise songs as we were riding in the car. Two of our favorite (misguided) lyrics were...
"Speak the weasel, speak the weasel..." (Speak no evil, speak no evil)
and
"George Washington, George Washington, praise him too!" (Why shouldn't I, Why shouldn't I, praise Him too!)
The funny thing is, once the oldest started singing these lyrics the other two just naturally joined in! "Speak the weasel" is still a family favorite!

I LOVE THAT sherry! How precious!!!! I think something I learned when I have kids and they say something or interpret I'll write it down to remember and share.
I was teaching at the local YMCA and the only radio station we got was a country one. They always have the strongest signal around here. Anyway I forget which one but the lil kids were singing their lil hearts out and it wasn't that PG!!! I was mortified. Mommy and daddy love this one.
I was workin at the tanning salon and watched a lil girl while her mum went to tan. Whiskey Lullaby came on and she's like this is my FAVORITE song! OMG
