I ordered this cookbook by Andrea Chesman with my garden seeds and I have skimmed through it once, but WOW, I want to make everything in it. It is really well organized in terms of seasonal produce. The book lists recipes from early spring asparagus through late fall squash and winter root vegetables. There are 4 or 5 recipes for each veggie and they are true to the season, no impossible combinations of spring peas and butternut squash. It also has an informational page about each vegetable, from growing tips to nutrition and storage info.
I am even more excited to get my garden going now, so I can try these recipes. Usually when I get a new cookbook I find that I want to try maybe 20% of the recipes, but with this book, there are only at most, 3 recipes I don't want to make.
Also, the recipes are not complicated, just easy ways to use the freshness of your garden. Try Pan Roasted Green Beans with Warm Soy Vinaigrette or Pasta with Fresh Tomatoes and Wilted Greens followed by Sweet Potato Pie with Praline Topping. Yum. |

Sounds interesting, thanks!
There is another cookbook along these lines called "Too Many Tomatoes: a cookbook for when your garden explodes." It's organized by vegetable, too, and pretty good.
Crunchy crafty goodness and psychoses...;-)http://nashbabe.blogspot.com

The original Victory Garden (PBS series) cookbook is set up this way and I love it... but in addition, offers planting and harvesting directions, too. All veges alphabetized, and herbs to follow. It's from the 80's, but I have to say that the majority of the recipes in there I would make hands down. The pesto recipe is the gold standard!!!
Farmgirl Sister #80, thanks to a very special farmgirl from the Bluegrass..."She was built like a watch, a study in balance ... with a neck and head so refined, like a drawing by DaVinci"... NY Newsday sportswriter Bill Nack describing filly, Ruffian. http://www.buyhandmade.org/ |
