We have 3 willow trees in our yard (used to have 5) that are really quite stunning. Friends will come over and make comments about our yard like, "it looks just like Gone with the Wind"....or "You could have weddings right here in your yard". Pretty - yes. Would I get rid of them in a hearbeat today..yes.
The only problem is that they don't loose their leaves until very, very late when it is very, very cold. This year, the leaves didn't fall until the snow came and forced them off the branches. All was beautiful still...until all of the snow melted, and the grass is covered with leaves and twigs. It is to snow again on Thurs. So I spent hours today, in the rain, raking and hauling leaves and branches. I only got about 1/4 of the debris up! Tomorrow will be colder, but the sun might shine. I just kept trying to think about all of the exercise that I was getting while getting soaked to the bone!
I plan on planting 50 more tulip bulbs tomorrow too. Dreaming of the real spring thaw! We were ice skating on Saturday, raking on Tuesday, and will be sledding again on Thursday. Always adventure in Michigan.

I love the look of the Willow tree, We have one willow here and when the barn was being built some of the willow's roots were damaged, now I have been told that it will die due to this, I have my fingers crossed that it will come back because the willow is an original to this house.

Heather, it seems as though they are so resilient. I bet yours will make it. They are just meant to live!
The only reason that we are down to 3 from 5 was because my husband was chop happy and he took down 2 that were leaning toward the house. He was building a sunroom and didn't want to risk anything.
Having a new barn is great too!

| Willows are beautiful. I want to plant a weeping willow this year, they are one of my favorites, too. I have some hybrid willows I started planting for a windscreen/privacy screen and I didn't get around to it and they were dead looking when I planted them. They didn't grow at all and looked like sticks sticking up out of the yard and when you scratched the bark, there was no green. But I had heard that willows are pretty hardy, so I didn't tear them out and the next year they started sprouting up. Apparently something in the roots was still alive, and now they are doing great. |
