My daughter has done the most wonderful project. She purchased a binder and fancy paper and made a recipe book where she included favorite recipes from different family members that we have used over the years. Each page features the recipe plus a photograph of the person it originated from. One example is her gr-grandmother's hermit cookie recipe. The page has a pic of her dear granny taken years ago in her garden, the recipe printed out fancy, and then any other little pics she's cut out of magazines or purchased at a scrapbooking store.
It is a beautiful keepsake and I was thinking what a wonderful gift it would make for mothers to give daughters.

In 1999 I did a family recipe book for my husband's side of the family (lots of sisters in law there!!) We had everyone give us at least one recipe for each of 5 catagories (main dishes, appetisers, soups and salads, breads, and desserts ) we also added a Misc catagory for things like play dough and sidewalk chalk and like that. We gave everyone enough of the righ size paper (we did a 5x7 little clear view binder so we could put pictures on the front and back cover ....color copies. We also had each family (there were 6) decorate a divider page. Our family did soup and salads. Each family put on their family picture and the name of the catagory and then decorated it how they wanted. Some with the recipe pages..we had some plain in handwritten form, and some with elaborate borders drawn by the mom or kids, and some with pictures on them...we copied all the recipe pages in black and white and the dividers and cover pages (mostly collages of the big family camping trip we had the year before) and told everyone what one book would cost for copies and supplies. If they wanted more than one they had to do the copying. I kept the originals and made up the one book per family..it was sure fun!! Alot more work than it sounded like it would be, but very worthwhile. I want to make copies for my kids someday. I need to do one for my side of the family sometime..would have to go further into the family (great aunts and cousins and stuff) to get enough though, since there are only 3 kids and my mom left in my family. But it is certainly worth doing! wonderful gift idea too!! It is so fun to have recipes that are family traditions right there handy!

We try to do this whenever anyone (male or female) gets married. We all put our favorite recipes together and send them to whoever's coordinating and there is a family favorites cookbook with photos of who they came from and sometimes pictures of the food if it is a complicated recipe. It has always been a big favorite and it's a nice way for the new person to get to know our family. I once met my cousin's husband for the first time and he said " I know you , you are the awesome cheesecake!" Well that's one way to be remembered!
