I have read so much about the wonderful finds Nancy Jo and others find out going to thrift shops and seen the pictures that I decided today to give it a whirl.
I am afraid I failed though, I couldn't find anything. I did buy one pitcher that looks like milk glass but I know it's not because the made in China sticker gave it away.
So, I need a thrift shop lesson. Do you go everyday or do you know when the new items have been brought in or what, or maybe I just need to move where Nancy Jo lives. Kathy

I posted a thread once titled 'The Nancy Jo school of Thrifting" In it I explain Nancy Jo's way. You go slow, you look at everything and then go back and look again because you don't see everything the first time and then if need be you poke around again. And if you go in looking for a certain thing you will never find it. So, clear the mind and just enjoy poking around and don't be in a hurry. And good things will just jump into your cart. Is that about it. Nancy Jo.? MB

kathy dear .. don't limit your 'bargain hunting' to just 'thrift stores' .. i find the very best things at the very best prices in ANTIQUES shoppes! i often find vintage doilies, buttons, fabrics, books for under five dollars at antiques shoppes .. i also go to antiques shows and look in 'prissy booths' for primitives and in primitive booths of 'prissies'.
today i stopped at a couple antiques shoppes in DELAWARE ..and found a huge jar of very early primitive buttons for only FIVE DOLLARS .. i got an armload of books for $2.00 each (the tabletop picture kind!) i bought some monogramed linens for one dollar each (i make dolly aprons and 'pockets' with them! would have found more .. but i was excited to get back on the road to arrive on my daughter's doorstoop!
it's fun to sometimes look for 'bargains' with a 'theme' in mind .. maybe a 'color' ... or 'gardeny' things ... textiles .. jewelry .. children's tea cups ... ohhhh .. a quote i once heard: (the world is so full of wonderful things .. we all should be as happy as kings). ALWAYS have an eye out for ANY treasure that grabs your heart! don't buy something JUST because it is CHEAP!!!that way .. you may end up with piles of JUNK that you really didn't want .. just buying on IMPULSE! if you do see something that isn't particularly YOU .. it may be just the perfect gift for someone who will appreciate it!
i try to buy the best 'quality' i can at the best 'price' i can find! kathy .. i know where lots of good deals can be found here in kentucky!! come visit and we'll spend the day runnin' here and there ... treasure hunting! xo, frannie

I don't know about your thrifts, Kathy, but some of our bigger thrift chains have become quite "pricey" and think something vintage is always a treasure and slap a high price on it, or put it in a showcase. Our Goodwill is VERY guilty of that.
Unfortunately, there aren't any thrifts here that aren't associated with Goodwill, or some other large charitable org....so you often run into the same thing everywhere, high priced goods that aren't too great... I typically only go when things are half off. And, I try to go in the middle of the day when noone else might be there. I like to look in peace, and there's usually somekind of "drama" with screaming kids, or screaming adults at busier times. I NEVER go on a weekend...my patience just can't take it :)
I always start at the fabric and linens first, then to the home section, and then clothes. There's a lot of 1970's crap in our stores right now...it wasn't pretty then, it isn't NOW!!!!

I find when I'm thrifting I spend lots of time. I need about 2 hours to go through or Goodwill and 1.5 for our St. Vinnies. I start at the front of the store and work my way around the perimeter and then through the middle. I too find that the big store are quite expensive and they e-Bay the good stuff. I like to hit Antique shops and mall along with estate sale, auctions and rummage sales. I always shop with an open mind and buy only what I really like. If I have a doubt I don't buy. I try to never feel down about not finding anything because that tends to make me make bad choices just to buy something. Thrifting takes time and patience. I do keep a small book of what I am looking for that I try to read before I go. I also do not plan my visits very often they just happen. ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif) |

Nancy does find some neat things I must say. I've gotten in the habit of looking for salt & pepper shakers, along with some small shelf things to put them on. I rarely look for clothes, but came out very lucky one time by getting several sweaters for $2 that I just saw in a catalog from Lane's End for almost $50 each. I have gotten some beautiful things over the years. Now girls, I'll tell ya right now if you go shopping with Wilma, she knows the best places to find high quality stuff but low prices. I'm itching for another run! haha

kATHY, The girls here pretty much said it all. Just keep going, some days you might come home with a ton of stuff another day nothing. They put new things out everyday, and usually more then once a day. I think I just happen to have a really good thrift store, plus lots of people in this area seem to get rid of more, older homes being taken apart by younger people who really don't value the things they are throwing out. So just keep going, coming home with just one or two things is a treat. NANCY JO

Adorable stuff, Jessica! I love those Peddler malls. We're taking mom to one on the 20th because, that's what she wants to do for her 60th birthday! She wants to go to the one in Winchester, and then the one in Georgetown where we've found such great stuff.
