I'm kindof struggling with two urine stains on our only piece of carpet. We're getting rid of the carpet in the Spring, but until then, I can't get these *$%^&%# stains clean. I've tried the enzymatic cleaners, I've tried basic vinegar, water and borax, shoot, I've even tried SHOUT because, even though it's a chemical, it always gets creepy stuff out.
Now it just smells "pee-y", and the stain seems even darker. What can I do

I have had some success with a big old pile of borax, baking soda mix.. then pour some vinegar on it & let it sit till it starts to dry. Maybe add some tea tree oil too. After it dries(sometimes a few days) vacuum what you can & use a scrubbie to get the rest. I have a huge area rug that is multi colored, & I didn't notice any damage, but if you have a fine quality carpet, I don't know if this is recommended or not. Since you are getting rid of it; I doubt it, so its worth a shot |

I'll give it a shot, Lisa. I'm stumped. We even steam cleaned the carpet a few weeks ago, and it didn't do anything at all....weird.

| Jonni, my advice was going to be get rid of the carpet, but you're already going to do that. That's what I ended up doing as well. Raising dogs and having carpet just don't go together. It's not so weird that steam cleaning didn't do anything, all steam cleaning does for urine is set it in deeper into the fibers, so most likely it made it worse. I would do what Lisa said, or else rip the carpet out sooner. |

Walmart sells some carpet stain remover in a white bottle, it worked for me in the past, sometimnes had to do again. It's called Folex. It got out lipstick, koolaid out of white carpet. Hope it works for you.

Yep--she sure did. It's very strange. She goes out, she potties, she comes back in and later in the night.....she potties. I know she's older, so it could be a weak bladder, but geez. Then we go days without incident. I didn't have time this evening, but I'm going to attack them tomorrow night.
I dunno. Stinker pup.

I had the same problem with my Dane Betsy as she got older. She would pee on her bed in her sleep. The vet said that is common in older spayed females. I got some meds from the vet called Proin, which works great, BUT it has that cold med (can't think of name)in it that was banned. It was actually taken off the market for a while, but pet owners begged to have it put back on. I never noticed any other side effects in Betsy, except that her peeing did decrease greatly at night which was GOOD |

I'm wondering...was she fixed early? Daisy was just spayed last year, in September, when we adopted her from the shelter--but, she is older, so maybe it's just more difficult as they age regardless. I tackled it just a few minutes ago--I put down Shout, I put down vinegar and I put down about an inch of Borax, then spritzed it with water and left it down for about an hour. Then I filled a bucket with a little bit of Dawn and warm water and scrubbed scrubbed. We'll see. Leave it to me to try to clean somthing with all of that, and it's still smells "pee-y"...Grr...

If all that cleaning isn't getting the smell out, it might have sunk down into your carpet pad or even worse...the sub floor...eeek! My advice- If what you have already done hasn't cleared the problem, find a strong Essential oil like peppermint or Lavender that will cover the smell up and just put a few drops on that spot every day or two until you rip out the rug. It sounds like your carpet fibers might have locked in the smell. :( Sometimes the only thing you can do is to mask the odor until you remove the problem. You also could dust your carpet with baking soda and leave it over night and the vacuum in the morning. Sometimes that helps.

Alee, I'll definitely try the baking soda--totally forgot about that, and I have a fresh box waiting.
It's so chilly that I hate to pull the rug up right now, but it might be better than this!!!

| I don't know of any "green" solutions, but I know a couple of totally "not green" ones. One is called "Spot Shot." Does wonders on pet stains. Also, one I learned about here at the Farmgirl Connection is called "Kids and Pets." Also does a good job. I've used both of those with great success. Should help get you through until Spring! |

Well, I think I might have figured out my stain dillema. I tackled the stains on Wednesday evening, and seemed to do a pretty good job with the mountain of borax, vinegar, shout, dawn dishwashing liquid, etc...and then I placed clean towels over the spots because it was going to be raining and they are in the direct travel path of all the dogs.
Last night, we came home to discover that Miss Spoiled Rotten German Shepherd Rose, is the "stain extender"...she's been pottying on the very spot I keep cleaning and last night was the first time I've been able to SEE the evidence, not just the previous stain that I thought came back!!!! She had pottied right on top of the clean towel over the stain.
So, instead of hanging out sewing last night, I steamed cleaned those two spots again. I threw some baking soda down and we'll see what happens tonight, I guess

Alee, if it warms up a little in February or so, I'm putting everything out on the porch, hillbilly style, and I'm ripping the carpet up and whitewashing it until I figure out my diamond pattern and colors.

It could be a severe urine track, bladder, or kidney infection, her/him may not be asble to hold onto.

Does anyone know about cat pee? My Mr. Cat finds his spots and does it. I have shampooed over and over but its still there. I was wondering if borax would do the trick. I will have to try it. and other helpful hints I;ll take. Thanks Ladys.

Joni, I know some people might frown on this but it does keep the dogs safe while you are away and keeps you from coming in to a mess. Large crates are wonderful for when you are away and most dogs even feel safer because they have that need for a "den".

Joy, our dogs have been crated since they were younger, but now they don't need them--this (pottying thing) is kind of a weird happening in our house, and I'm thinking it's a dominancy thing between Rose (5) and Bad Seed (9)...I just got rid of two crates for 115 lb. dogs and I'm sort of unwilling to go back to that--we can actually have a chair for HUMANS to sit in now

Hey renren,
Try this for the cat urine - Grab a bottle of club soda, take off the cap, stick your thumb in it and shake hard. Spray it on the urine spot - don't soak it, just make it wet. It will smell worse , but it will smell better as it dries. The club soda seems to neutralize the urine smell.
Also, you can use salt... pour a THICK layer over the wet spot and let sit overnite or until the salt has hardened. Sweep up as much as you can and then vaccuum the rest. Make sure you use plenty of salt since it soaks up the stain and can only pull up as much as it can hold. If the stain is still there, then use more salt. Hope this helps!!

Back to Debi's comments, my fifteen year old female dog gets bladder infections, and then can't hold her urine. She also gets grumpy, which helps me understand the problem--because she is inclined to not try too hard to "hold on" when she's healthy.

I was wondering about a urinary tract infection, or bladder attack a few weeks ago with Daisy--she seemed to have to go out a lot--kept walking to the front door and looking at me, even after she'd been out a 1/2 hour prior. She's not grumpy, but she's wild. I do know that she was a hunting dog, so living inside has been a new endeavor for her. She's only been with us a year, and we have struggled through a number of issues that an outdoor dog might have, living inside.
I may call the feed store today and see about some meds for her, just to be on the safe side.
