Has anyone made a dress form? I've seen books & videos advertised in sewing publication to make your own out of duct tape, etc.
Just wondering.

I've never done it before, either, but I've wondered. If anyone wonders what we're talking about, here's a link: http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/t00002.asp . Have any of you farmgirls done it?

I had a friend that worked at Old Navy, save me one of the old mannequins they were tossing in the dumpster. It was only the torso, but I padded her up to try and bring her up to size. (stuffed her bra and leotard that I put on her) Holy Moly are those dummies ever small! Like 32" bust 22" waist ! LOL No wonder the clothes look so great in the window. That's the closest I ever got to "making" a dress form. Worked for a while, but then started to take up too much precious space in my sewing area and I wound up donating her.

That is so interesting. I would probably just cry if I could see up close and personal like that how very large I really am. haha Seriously..If I had space for one I would do the paper tape one..it makes sense that it sorta makes paper mache!

My VBB (very best bud) Cathy and I made one for me a couple of years ago. We had a ball. It was not hard, just time consuming. Mine is named "Daffy" for 2 reasons. She is made out of bright yellow duck tape like a daffodil. And we are very "Daffy" so I thought it fit.( no pun intended) I wish I still had the site I used because it had some hilarious stories with it about people making these things. I'll try to find the site. Anyway. It was fun and it turned out well. After you get it wrapped and off of you, you can stuff them like a very firm pillow. Dh made a simple stand for her so she is as tall as me. The only thing I would do different is to give her arms atleast to above the elbow. (I made her armless like the store ones) I am thinking of doing from the waist down next as I have a terrible time getting pants to fit. I haven't figured out how I would mount this on a stand though. I now understand why nothing that I buy at the store fits. She looks so different than I thought I did. Try it if you have time and an understanding friend you can trust. Remember this friend has to cut you out of this thing! It used about 3 rolls of tape ,I'm a size 8, and a BIG bag of batting to stuff it. I have heard of some filling it with that expanding foam they use for insulation. I was afraid I'd put to much in and it would explode. Okay enough rambling Try it It's great to have a custom form!!

Okay I'm Back. For lots of tips and some very amusing stories go to www.leanna.com/DuctTapeDouble/ I did not buy any instructions from this site, but found the tips great help. There are enough sites with directions and being the extremely thrifty person I am ( some would say cheap) I Figured I'd try it without puchasing instructions. If nothing else read the stories and tips.
