What have you gals done with my kids? I'm almost in shock, but ya know it's all good! Following the amazing advice and putting my foot down has made an incredible difference in them. Seeing poor, sick and homeless people has whipped reality into their heads better than any lecture ever could. Watching me sew my own clothes made them proud of me. (Well, the comedy relief helped also. I kept poking myself and they would giggle every time I would go "Hiss"!)
I've started using vinegar, borax and baking soda to clean and they've been helping. But now they came up a singsong to go with it. "Vinegar to disinfect, so we don't get seck" Thankfully, neither intends on a songwriter career!
Almost hit a snag in the plan for USA made, handmade only rule. The oldest's birthday is next month. She wanted to redo her room more grown up (she'll be the ripe old age of 14) and I have to agree. We haven't gotten any linens for over 8 years. But there were conditions. One, she had to clean out all the "junk", old toys (broken, mostly) etc. and sell it at our yard sale. And two, everything had to be USA or handmade. Anything else and she had to pay for it herself or find another way. She agreed with the first one eagerly. There was instant protest at the second. "But Mom, all that stuff is ugly and boring and I want a new theme" I said "Well, what theme are you looking for" She says "I want gingham or country." Okey dokey! I pulled up the MJF store! She sat here for two hours ooohing and aaahing mixing and matching. She especially wants a "Miss Wilma brand" pillow! I had to laugh at that, then explained that Miss Wilma is an actual person that makes them individually by hand. "No Way" "Yes way!" LOL.
Then she read the information on the quilt. Nice job, she finally "got it". Of course, now she wants to get rid of all our "cheap junk" and buy all new MJF stuff. Okay, well, she's missing some of the finer points, like sticking to a budget and saving up for them, but still. And since she wants a lamp to match, she foraged for one...Mine!
So, Thank you to MaryJane and her mission, Miss Wilma brand, and all you! Here's to a great New Year and one more step to a New Life!

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

Sherry, I don't have kids, but you really made me laugh here. I'm glad that things are working better with the kids and its a proud moment to see your daughter grow into a savvy young lady even if she is way over budget

I'm sooo glad, Sherry! What a difference! Give yourself some credit, Mom--you stuck to your guns and your beliefs, and your children will benefit for the rest of their lives. Sounds like they're onto greener pastures, and maybe have a realization that it's better to give than to receive....congrats on getting to decorate her room with Mary Jane's Farm stuff--how exciting!!!!

And, I happen to love the sing song--I may adapt it for my own purposes!!!!

Sherry, what a terrific story! Good for your kids, and good for you in being able to show them the way! Thanks for the smile, and yes, the sing-song has a great ring to it, so don't write them off as songwriters( or perhaps jingle-writers!) just yet!

Our kids can surprise us when we least expect it!

Congrads Sherry. Kids sometimes take a bit to get it but they carry it for life. Maybe she would like to make her own quilt. The have some really cool and easy patterns and she could recycle some of the families jeans or clothing to make it. Matching pillows and rugs too. There is no end to what she could do with inspiration from a Mom like you. Thanks for inspiring your children.

Have fun Sherry. Now you need to get them making their own things. We grew up that way. We made pretty much everything we wanted. Still do. But it was more out of need, then want. We never had the money to go buy things, we had to make them. People would say, we have so much talent. I never thought talent had anything to do with it. That was the only way we could get something new. Life lessons I guess.
