May 10th or 17th would work great for me. I'm not far from Berea at all and like you all said it's a pretty time for here. I'm getting excited!

Yay, Lainey! I'm really looking forward to getting together with you all. I've got these dates marked down on the calendar, so I'm just biding my time until we set it in stone

Jessica - I was not aware of the Stock Dog trials. Sounds like something my family would enjoy attending. I'll have to find out the dates and maybe make plans. Thanks for the info.

Hey, it's Ann from Michigan again. We are coming much closer on a decision regarding relocating to your neck of the woods. The Louisville company would like my husband to start with them around May/June. Selling our house would determine the timing. I don't mean to go off track regarding the trip that you are planning (it would be wonderful to join you though!). I wanted to ask a couple questions.... 1. How is the gardening? Is the soil quite rocky? I am in Zone 5, and I know you are Zone 6. 2. School districts in the outskirting areas... do you have an opinion on the best areas?
My head and stomach is churning with more, but that's a good start for now. We are talking about taking another trip in Feb. Thanks in advance for your help! Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com http://forresterfarm.etsy.com
Ok, one more question. I was just looking at the local farmer's mkt. listings on Local Harvest. For those who live in the area... what markets do you like to go to? Do any of you Kentucky gals sell at a local market? I'm excited about my husband's opportunities, but I'll be leaving my own little farm utopia behind!

Oh that would be wonderful news Ann if you guys move to Kentucky. The soil varies amongst the state. Janice and Rachel might know how it is in Louisville. Down here I don't have a problem with my flowers and can grow pretty much anything with no problem. I can get you some soil info...I just got to check my links.
Spencer County has a strong FFA program and they are out in the country. It is about a 15 minute drive I think from Louisville, if even that. Sheperdsville is another town south on I-65 towards Nashville, but it is 20 minutes away.
A valuable ag-resource website here for KY is our Dept of Ag. It is filled with tons of info: http://www.kyagr.com/
They have a whole page on the Farmer's markets. They are just booming across the state. http://www.kyagr.com/marketing/farmmarket/index.htm
Let us know if you need any more info. :)

yay! Another Kentucky girl!!! Janice would know best about the soil in Louisville, but I'm betting there some good soil seeing it's near the river. We all have good ole' kentucky clay to contend with, I think. Near me, in Northern Kentucky (an hour and 1/2 from downtown Louisville), ours is clay but amended well, can grow anything.
You will LOVE Louisville. I'm jealous just thinking that you will be near my favorite restaurant, Lilly's (on Bardstown Road)!!!! When you come to town next, you MUST go there. She's a James Beard chef, who cooks regional, seasonal foods. We've been every season and there's nothing there I wouldn't eat. Most of the veges are heirloom and either from her garden or local farmers, same thing with meats and cheeses. All boutique farms. Crud. Now I'm hungry!!!!

Oh Lilly's sounds wonderful, I am so excited to try it. But you are already making me miss our local Marie Catrib's which sounds very similar! Local and fresh. I am placing my annual order for wholesale herbs for our local market. My husband thinks I should keep moving forward as normal, and if we make the move, we will sell them to another vendor (at my cost), or bring them to Kentucky. What herbs would y'all want?
I really appreciate all of the feedback that I've been getting both in e-mails and thru the beloved MJF site! Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com http://forresterfarm.etsy.com

I just know you will love it. Bardstown Road in general is fun. Eclectic and just FULL of things to do in all different genres. From burritos "as big as your head" to places like Lilly's, and antiques and clothing stores and vintage kitchy crap stores and you name it, it goes on for MILES and MILES. And, it truly does go to Bardstown, Kentucky
I'd be glad to give you some more things to do there, and I know Janice (Miss Bee Haven) can give you more in's and out's because that girl is EVERYWHERE cool!
Gosh! What herbs??? Well, I use them all, so if you've got some to spare when you get here, I'll come around!!!!
I'm really hoping that you find your niche there and do please let me know if you try Lilly's. It's hands down the only place I'll eat for any special occasion.

Wondering what the general opinion of Frankfort, KY is. It seems as though the school districts have better ratings and though it is a bit of a drive to Louisville, it isn't too far. We are just trying to research as best we can from here. We will make another trip soon, but thought I'd get input from you as well. I'm thankful for opportunites, but decisions and change sure can be difficult!
Herbs - I went somewhat mainstream this time. Sweet Basil,Chive, Cilantro, Dill, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lemon Grass, Lemon Verbena, Peppermint, Oregano - greek and italian, Parsley - curled and italian, Rosemary, Sage - golden and tricolor, Savory, Tarragon, Thyme - Lemon, varigated and silver.

Hi Ann
I'm a newbie KY girl but just wanted to share that Rineyville where I live now has been described as one the 10 best school districts in the country. I don't have kids in school anymore but have friends here who do and if they are an example I'd say its true. Also one of my friend's husband is on the school board in Rineyville and he just brags about the school system. Come check it out or if there is something specific you'd like to know about it I could find out for you. It would be great to have you as a neighbor. I have a small farm with sheep and plan to grow herbs and flowers too.

Luna,
Where did you move from? Thanks for the feedback on the school system. Rineyville might be too far away from where my husband's office would be (in Louisville) to make that trek every day, but it's worth checking out.
I get the impression from the Kentucky Gal posts though, that Kentucky farmgirl gatherings would be often enough that we'd feel like neighbors! Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com http://forresterfarm.etsy.com |

How about LaGrange or the area surrounding? http://www.lagrangeky.net/ I think it's about 12 miles from downtown, and it's a lovely little place. Or, you could also think about. What type of home style are you thinking of...older/urban, older/farm, newer construction, whatever. I really love the area surrounding Lilly's..I believe it's called Cherokee. Older homes, probably early 1900's to 1930's, loads of old churches, restaurants, the zoo...and close to lots of funky shopping. You could ideally walk many places. Here is a link: http://www.cherokeetriangle.org/ also, I'm attaching the link to Lilly's!!!!! http://www.lillyslapeche.com/index.html

Thanks Jonni, Lilly's looks wonderful!!! We are having a little party at our house tonight, but after the guests are gone and the munchkins are in bed, I think I'll go thru those links with my husband.
Currently we have a modest brick ranch with almost 3 acres. My husband built a sunroom where a deck used to be - which I love. You can get a glimpe at my http://annforrester.tohe.com site. When we were looking for houses 9 years ago, I really would have loved to have found a charming farmhouse with a big barn. Instead we found a 60's ranch, added character, and a mini barn for the mini horses. We have been involved with our local farmer's market for 5 years now and have gotten a good foothold in the wedding industry with local brides (providing flowers). Leaving and changing from that will be difficult, but change isn't always bad!!!!
I really do appreciate all of the feedback that you are all giving me. It just helps to have some connections - regardless of what we decide to do. Do we stay or do we go now? Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com http://forresterfarm.etsy.com |

It's lovely, Ann--and you can find that here, I know it. The Louisville area (and don't forget Indiana just across the river from downtown) have such wonderful neighborhoods. Every town has it's not-so-greats, but I really think if you make the choice, you'll be happy. And as I mentioned before, Louisville has a lot going for itself with the farmers markets, and in general. Jus and I went for a Saturday drive last summer, didn't know where we would go, but ended up in Louisville on the hottest day of the year. Let me tell you, that downtown was hoppin. People everywhere in the wade pools and fountains, children swimming in the water park by the river. Cincinnati would have been a ghost town--after 5:00 on Friday afternoon, there's a mass exodus. It also reminded me of Indianapolis, which is another great place and surrounding areas...

Ann - I live just down the road from Frankfort. I will be honest, it isn't the prettiest town even for it to be our state capital. It also really depends on which school you go to. The drive from Frankfort to Louisville is about 30 minutes give or take a few minutes. Sometimes there is construction, etc. Some of the outlying areas of Louisville are really beautiful and out in the country.

I agree with you, Jessica. I bet at one time is was lovely, but it isn't much now--and not much in the downtown except for government stuff. My boss just went down for an AOC meeting and said he was surprised at how few restaurants were there for lunch...You know men like to eat!

Your welcome Anne. It takes about 45 minutes to Louisville from Rineyville. Although I admit that I don't do it too often yet cause I'm still busy getting the homestead going. I moved from NJ 6 months ago to an old delapidated 1885 farm house on13 acres. One old work barn. 8 sheep, 1 dog and 1 cat. Ocassional chickens and guinea hens. Virtually no fencing. We have a lot to do to get going but we have nothing but time. Kids are grown and independent mostly. I've NEVER in my 57 years met nicer more helpful people. Except through this site which has also been quite amazing.
I'm enjoying all the tips on what to do in the area. I definitely have to explore Louisville more. Sounds wonderful. Get together in Louisville, anyone?
