My mom brought me a beautiful cookbook for Christmas called Sweet Pies, written by an African American woman from the Flint/Detroit area. This key lime pie is in it--a bag of key limes was cheaper than one lemon at the Grocery, so I bought them!!!! Each pie is a recipe from either an Aunt, her mother, a friend, an old friend of the family, etc...and each pie comes with a story about that person--not all are lovely, some are sad. Husband's leaving, illness, what have you, but each story shows resilience. Also, this book celebrates women and cooking, and how each of us passes our "magic" down to our daughters, or daughters in law, nieces, etc...

The funniest thing I've read in it so far is that you shouldn't trust a woman who would just give away her recipes willy nilly. A woman's recipes are her secrets, her soul, her currency!

Uhoh I am in trouble cause I put recipes on my blog all the time! I am allergic to key limes (but not regular limes! Crazy I know) but key lime pie always sounds so refreshing.

I know--there are many that I give away, but I have to be honest, I guard my sweet potato pie recipe with my life. It was my Nanny's mother's "mammy's" recipe, and it is SINFUL....and everywhere I go people ask I act like I didn't hear them

How strange--I'm a little ignorant as to the difference between key limes and regular (besides the obvious size and a bit different taste)...It is refreshing, though. I really like lime in general, and I love Key Lime Cheesecake more, but I just don't have the patience to make a cheesecake!

I've made my Key Lime Pie with regular Limes when I could not find Key Limes. No one knew the difference.

Ok...not sure what I did wrong, but the darn thing just didn't really "set". It called for boiling until thick, then removing from heat and then adding the yolks, the lime and zest and then putting back on low for 2 mins. Which I did. Then you pour into shell. Did that, too. It seemed like it was setting, then when I took it out of the fridge a few minutes ago to have a piece, it was more like thick honey consistency....
Bah. Failure! Tastes good, just was a mess! My black lab could NOT believe I was just scraping a perfectly good pie into the garbage...he got to lick the pie plate :)

Oh Man! I can't believe you did that either - especially if it tasted good!! :)

I love key lime pies... as long as it's not green. That seems to be a sure sign of a cook who isn't exactly familiar with key lime pie. ;)

Nope, did NOT use any "green" in pie! I'm not so fond of that, either.....it's more a custard color, isn't it? It was actually kindof like lime yogurt, so it wasn't too terrible, but when you want a PIE, you want a pie :)

Thanks to Jonnie, I had to make a key lime pie today!!

I made too much for the pie pan. But I'm not sitting here eating it with a spoon out of the bowl. Nope, not me! ;)
