Last night Sky was chewing on her fur to pick out some Burdock burrs so I went over and helped her get them out, but she continued to put on her hair afterwards. Then she started coughing, wheezing and making these horrible burping like noises in her throat. So I made sure she had fresh water and food and she started eating her food whole.

I assumed she must have gotten a piece of one of the burrs caught in her throat and was trying to dislodge it. I was a little concerned, but not alarmed yet.

Then she started doing this hard gulping. She went back into the hallway and after a bit we start hearing this "rip rip rip" sound. And there she was! Ripping up the carpet by our bathroom door!! She used to do that when she was a baby puppy, but hasn't done that for about 4 years now.

Then later she found a scrap of fleece about 1 inch wide and 10 inches long. Luckily I was watching her at the moment but she picked it up and started to eat it! I had to wrench open her mouth and pull the silly thing out! She had already started swallowing it!

Anyone ever had a dog go completely batty like this? I have heard of people having PICA which is an uncontrollable urge to eat non-food items. I think my dog has developed PICA :(

Alee, when Rose had her cyst-yuk thing, she was really batty. It seems like it's the only way to get your attention, maybe? She kept licking the wall, the door, pacing like crazy, just overall behavior that wasn't her. Perhaps she has that lodged in her throat and she's just "coping" and trying to work it out--they have strange ways, for sure, but I'd keep an eye on her. Is she drinking any water at all?

Sounds like she does have a burr caught in there. Dogs will eat umm fluffy scratchy stuff to kind of help it go down.

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

Yes, she has been drinking her water, and she did eat some food last night. I am going to take her into the doctor today as she has been known to eat weird things before.

Once when I was gone she ate about 5 little ceramic figurines of mine. My husband and I were worried that we were going to have to put her to sleep because of how much pain she was in. So I am worried that she might eat a sock or something and get a blockage.

Oh, Alee, my husky Lily ate the head off of one of those disposable razors...I was cleaning the tub, and she snuck in behind me, stole it and ate it before I even noticed "someone" had been in the room with me. She was ALWAYS into things like that. I'll never forget the conversation with the vet. Me: "yes, Hi. My dog ate a razor blade." The Vet: "well, you better just say goodbye now, honey..." And she lived to be 14.

Jonni- Let's hear it for dogs with iron digestive tracts! I am hoping the vet laughs at me for being the over protective doggie mom that I am, but on the other hand I would worry myself to death if I didn't take her in.

I think Sky is part husky...maybe it's a husky thing to be a sneak-theif.

I couldn't believe she tried to eat that fleece. She was less than 2 feet away from me! There was just something weird about how she was sniffing around. I could tell she was looking for something- and then wham! Suddenly she is gulping fleece like her life depends on it and I am reaching into her throat desperatly trying to keep her from swallowing it!

Sometimes dogs will try to eat weird stuff to help them barf. She may have burs irritating her stomach too. I'm glad you are taking her to the doggie doctor, I'm worried about her. Let us know how she is doing.

Wishing you joy in small things and peace in your heart

Yes, lets! I think it might be a husky trait--that sneaking to store things. Lily acted like she had a prize or something and would dive under the bed out of reach! She ate makeup, she ate metal--she went through a rock eating phase, too. Thankfully, that one didn't last. When you went to grab it out of her mouth, she clamped down her jaws and swallowed quickly.
Grr. I loved that silly girl!

Please let us know how Sky-dog is feeling--I think she's got something stuck in there.

Dr. Kitchel said that Sky should be just fine. Her kidneys are a bit sore (gee...I wonder why...maybe all that carpet she ate?) but other than that she isn't gulping/coughing/wheezing anymore. We just have to give her a bland diet for a few days and watch her poo to make sure she is going and no bloody stools and such.

Thanks for all the concern! I know Sky appreciates all the concern on her behalf. :D

I'm really glad, Alee. Those dogs--I'll tell you!!! I'm grateful that mine have been somewhat "accident" free since Rose's $500 surgery in September... Keep her comfy and give her a smooch for me and my clan!
