Hello Everyone,

I am new here. I currently live in Chicago, but BF and I have plans to move to SE OKlahoma in a few years.

What do we look for in buying a small farm?

Any ideas?

Julie

Julie,

I don't have any ideas, but would love to have you in OK.

Thanks Paula

Boyfriend is from Oklahoma originally, and I am from a small Illinois town, Carthage. We are living in downtown Chicago right now, and we want to buy a small farm down there in order as part of our plan to become financially independent.

I would at least like to be able to grow an organic garden for my future family's needs. Possibly supply restaurants. Or make my own finished product and sell directly on the web. We have a few niche crops in mind.

Where is Collinsville located? Are you farming now?
Julie

I would say write down the most important aspects you are looking for in your farm activities. When my mother bought property (not in OK) she ended up with not enough water and too many invasive tree roots to be able to do what she loves - gardening!
So, I say make that list! I only say it because of my mother's lesson and it is what I am doing!
Good Luck!

We have found one bit of land that we really like on a hilltop that is surrounded by pines but the hilltop is pasture with a pond, so we should be able to grow veggies. Also have large acreage of roughly 80 acres.

I have relatives that live in Oklahoma - I couldn't live there as I am too atached to the West but I have heard good things about it and (as with all places) bad things.
80 acres sounds wonderful and a hilltop too!
