Hi all! I am so very excited to have found this site! I am a new farmgirl and very interested in having some chickens for fresh eggs. I have about an acre of land in the beautiful state of Maine and have already checked with the town and I can have chickens and I can sell eggs at a farmstand at the end of my drive way. So, now that the zoning and codes have been checked, I want to get started! Any suggestions for a new farmgirl? For example: I have gone to the library and checked out some books on chickens but I need more info. any chicken sites you could recommend? And I am having trouble finding plans for a chicken house etc. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Sabrina |

hey shannon-
welcome, welcome!
we raise exhibition poultry, mostly bantams, but have laying hens as well. I have found my county's extension agent invaluable for (mostly) free literature and advice.
if you're on the Internet, you can also Google the words "hatchery or poultry hatchery" and you can get lots of info that way.
and last, there's a great magazine called "Small Farms Today";www.smallfarmstoday.com. great practical resource; look at their website.
let me know if i can help you in any way. i love my chickens-they were one of my first pets after we got married. i had a little pullet (girl) that rode around on my shoulder whenever we were outside. they are lots of fun.
talk to you soon. karen

Hi Shannon- Welcome to the site and to the fun world of chickens! There is a wonderful book -- Chickens In Your Backyard, A Beginner's Guide -- that will give you practical, non-technical advice on everything to do with chickens. Its by Rick & Gail Luttmann, and was published as A Rodale Organic Gardening Book. I bought a copy at the local Farm & Fleet after a farmgril friend of mine raved about it, and sure enough, it offered everything I needed to make sure I was taking proper care of the flock. Cathy |

I am new with chickens this year too, and have really been enjoying them. They are much easier than I would have thought. I have found a lot of information on backyardchickens.com, which also has a great message board.
Good luck with your girls! Nancy |
