Well, ridding myself of the bleach habit when it comes to cooking and raw meat is my green cleaning Waterloo. I know that vinegar and hydrogen peroxide can safely destroy the bacteria, too, but bleach is SO lodged in my psyche that I wanted to see just what the dilution of that "Clorox Daily Sanitizing Spray" was. After some internet research, I found that the "recipe" for a similar sanitizer is:

1/10 teaspoon 5.25% bleach to 1 quart water

I thought I would share it with anyone who uses bleach responsibly.

That is so good to know on a day like today. I spent all day cutting up an elk in my kitchen! I don't use bleach much anymore either..but raw meat surfaces and udder cleaning cloths get bleach
still. (well, I use bleach on the udder cloths if it is too cold or wet to hang them outdoors like now..otherwise I let the sun sanitize them) I will have to make up some spray!!! Sounds like it sure dosn't take much bleach..good to know.

I am so with you Libbie! I do use bleach responsibly and as sparingly as possible, mostly for washing egg cleaning rags and I still like to lightly bleach my tea towels and dishclothes...oh, and white socks when they get dingy. Once in awhile I will bleach my cutting boards before running them through the dishwasher too.
The 5.25% bleach should be plenty for household use. The hospital lab and housecleaning use a 10% solution for cleaning and disinfecting.

Libbie -- thanks for sharing this info. I use bleach very sparingly. Once in a while I'll throw a small amount in with white towels, undies, socks, etc. And once in a while I'll fill my kitchen sink with bleach water and soak my sink mats. I actually love the smell of bleach -- to me it means something is clean and disinfected. But I really have stopped using it much. I do also use it for the counter or cutting board when I've been doing meat.

Also, you do know that you will need to make a new spray solution every day? I worked in daycare and know that the bleach loses it's disinfectant qualities after 24 hours when it has been mixed with water.

Oh, Kay - I had no idea that I'd need to mix it new every time I use it - that's good to know. Thanks!

YEP, Its a toss up-- die from bleach, or die from an illness bleach could have prevented. What to do WHAT TO DO. OK I admit it, Bleach and soft scrub live here.

Nancy Jo - "ain't that the truth!!!!"

Dennise - I wonder about that, too. I would love to figure out a way to do it - I'd heard that if you keep it in an opaque spray bottle it will "keep." Kay - have you heard that, too? Any ideas?

Yeah I'm curious how good natural toilet cleaning can be? I mean for things that you must sanitize and sanitize well what is the BEST combo?

I admit- My name is Heather and I am addicted to soft scrub!!! Nothing else works or seems clean enough. I do only use it with ALL the windows open and by myself. And I use sparingly. I do use bleach on my whites because the water out here turns everything grey. ICK!! I am trying though....

Cheers,
Heather

try mixing vinegar and water in a spray bottle for cleaning. Vinegar is a disenfectant too. I use it on my kitchen counter tops and ALL my bathroom cleaning. Check out the books on all natural cleaning, etc. by "The Queen of Clean". She's got solutions for everything - even pets.

I have never used bleach in my laundry, but do use it in my toilet bowl. Just a little bit, poured in after cleaning every week. My mother was a bleach-a-holic, and we used it a great deal at the shelter for cleaning the floors. I have that Clorox cleaner that you mentioned, Libbie...I wasn't too crazy about it--it didn't seem to DO much, and it's VERY thin, like water. Of course, I had an addiction to Comet, so if it isn't like Comet, then I typically have to keep trying it out...
