I just use my favorite heavier cake recipe (like a coffee cake type apple cake or pumpkin bread...banana bread or cake..like that...) and fill the wide mouth pint size jars only half full. Sit them on a cookie sheet to bake at 350 for about 20 min (check with toothpick) and seal up with a hot jar lid and ring right away while still hot. Yum!! I did nut bread one time this way with cubscouts that was the talk of the neighborhood. Have fun!

MaryBeth there is literally hundreds of them on the net. you can do a search and find sites, big time with :"free cake in far recipes". And change it around will get more. I have a few around here, I will have to search. On the net my favorites are the canadian recipes. hope this helps.

I saw one in the latest issue of Mother Earth News. Sounded interesting and good. It may be posted on their website. |

I never did this before - my question is, how do you get it out of the jar to eat?

I usually butter the inside of the jar before using (being careful not to get any on the rim..would not seal as well) and if you use a wide mouth jar (I always do) it slips right out. Or..you can run a butter knife along the inside of the jar and then it does. works really slick

Or you can do what I do- get a spoon and a big glass of milk..... :) I will have to look for the chocolate-gingerbread recipe I used one year. They made the best quick gifts at Christmas. Mmmmmm.

THanks Jenny and Karin - both good suggestons for eating! I am going to try this - when it is sealed, how long does it last? Gosh, sorry for the silly questions.

We did this a long time ago, my step father ate them all, even though they were supposed to be gifts. lol So I can't remember how long is their shelf life? (my step father had then gone in a week or two! lol). |

You are supposed to be able to actually "can" them, as long as you don't frost them, and keep them for 6 months! Or, you can freeze them indefinitely.

Thanks Sheryl, I thought it was 6 months, but wasn't positive. Thanks again! I'll be doing some next year I think for gifts. |

Cheap and easy and every one loves them too! And for my hard to buy for brothers, I think they will be perfect! |
