I don't, but my elderly friend, Georgetta (who has now passed--she was 99), she canned and planted with the moon. I do use my great grandfather's planting "rules" too, for early spring crops (potatoes in the ground by St. Pat's day was his rule...)

My grandmother planted by the moon, but if she canned by it she never mentioned it? What are the canning rules?

My grandparents always planted by the moon. And I have it on good authority that here in the south it is best to plant your spring garden on Good Friday.
Canning I have not heard about, but I would say you better mind your mama.

I don't think we plant by the moon, just seasons or after certain days when it's not going to freeze or something. Mum always said you can't make bread rise or bake certain things while on your period or if the weather is a certain way. The moon is interesting. I love reading about old wives tales (not that that is) but even the farmers almanac I love it! :) My family always cans when they get the food.

I am going to do what mama says because a couple of times I canned beans and sweet potatoes and they didnt taste good. She says never to can in the lower signs and Never when the sign is in the bowels As for the period thing mom said never to walk thru the cucumber vines so do it or bust I did it , well the vines never did change that I saw wg

My grandma did things by the signs but I never learned much of it. If she told me something like that I sure listened though. Just in case.

Miss Wilma, Ive not heard of canning sweet potatoes? Do they get very soft, do you can in a hot water bath or pressure cooker? That would be nice to have around after the season is over Shirley |

hey Wilma, you asked if anyone worked on the moon? I do, 9-5 everyday!!!!
Seriously, I am a firm believer that most of what happens in our lives is controlled by the moon and solar system. Some people get carried away with it as we know but it is definitely true so keep listening to your Mama!!

Hannah you are right I never did fail but one time by following moms signs and that was caused by the neighbors cows not the moon, the moon had done a good job, up until that point but I will put that on the laugh page later tonight.

Shirley Mom says next Wednesday is a good time, I put my sweet potatoes in a large kettle and boil long enoughto soften peels so they will be easy to peel, I pour them out in the sink, run cold water over them and the peeling will slip right off. When I peel I drop into a large kettle of salt water, I have my jars ready , slice or quarter if large ones, pack jars then make a thin sugar syrup probably like 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar do lids put in pressure cooker bring to 10 lbs pressure and turn off, Now to use empty contents of jar into a baking disi cover the top with sugar and slice butter on top, I just guess at this bake at 400 until kinda syrupy and crusty on top. shut your eyes and forget the calories the potatoes are to die for. I take 2 qts to our Christmas supper every year and bring none home need me just let me know Miss Wilma
