I have too many pets...I've been stressing in a very major way because the pet hair is getting out of control. My dh brought home an old Kirby that he likes, but it's: a. Too heavy for me b. Clogs up every two feet and c. belts constantly either come off or burn up. I've been watching all those Dyson commercials with the cute Mr. Dyson and his neat British accent and liking what he says. Then I went to Home Depot and checked the price! EGads! $439 for the yellow one-dc17 and $579 for the one with an extra attachment for use on the couch. So yesterday, my dh and I went to a flea market. I turned a corner and there it sat....one lonely Dyson yellow dc17... in the booth of an elderly gentleman who deals in used vacuums. It wasn't his, it belonged to another man elsewhere in the flea market. This was the first one he ever had. We tried it, and it worked great. The price was $199. We pondered...we asked a ton of questions....I'm a desperate woman(I said that already). We bought it. I REALLY don't have 439.00 to spend right now. Originally, I intended to do research online...read reviews....but when I got it home and used it in a place where my dh had just used the Kirby, I was surprised and horrified at how much more it had picked up. Does anyone else use one of these? Do you like it? Any problems? Gee, I hope I did the right thing..

I have heard great things about them, Janice. Judy, a co-worker, has the "animal" I would like to get "the animal" dyson, but I don't have the cash, and frankly, with only one piece of actual carpet (that I plan on getting rid of in the spring), I think I'll just stick with my miele cannister.
I do, however, LOVE Mr. Dyson's very proper Queens English.
I think you done good, girl! And, like you said, it picks up!!!!

I have one. I love it. My kids pitched in and got it for Mother's Day this year. I had an old Kirby and hated it after 20+ years because of all the reasons you stated above. My Dyson is the yellow one with the roller ball. The only thing you have to be careful about is picking up chunks of stuff. It can vacuum pennies and nails and such, but it is really hard on it and the book said not to do that! I love that the cannister just comes right off and there are no bags. Be sure to empty it before it becomes to full. I always put the cannister in a plastic grocery sack so that it doesn't spray dust everywhere.

Thanks for the tips, Angie. I need to try and find a copy of the instruction book online and print it off for myself. Jonni - I just sent you an email with a pic of a new pie safe. I've got another pic I'm trying to get from my DH's phone.

I want a Dyson so bad, Doug asked me if I wanted one for Christmas... Somehow a vacuum doesn't bespeak love and good cheer to me... LOL I told him only if he was going to be the one vacuuming every day!

Good answer, Alee! :D But you're a pretty young thing! I'm an old farm chick with too many pets. :( And since it looks like we won't be hiring a maid any time soon, I'm looking for help and less work however I can get it! ROFLOL!

I think we are going to use some money from taxes to invest in a Dyson. I really do want one. We have a long haired dog that doesn't shed much, but sometimes our Kirby gets bound up by the long hair (hers and mine). I love my Kirby. I am a Kirby fan. I love how heavy they are because it makes me feel like they are doing a better job! And they last forever. I recently replaced the beater bar on ours because it was burning up belts. I think I would keep the Kirby and use it for "dirty" jobs like cleaning the car and such and use the Dyson for carpets and indoor floors.
And yes, The Dyson guy is very handsome and I adore his accent. :D

I had(have) a Dyson Canister (it looks like something Bill Murray would wear on his back in Ghostbusters). I liked it at 1st, but found it too be very cumbersome, VERY heavy & after a while it would switch back & forth between the carpet & floor setting on its own. Having many dogs, I found I was constantly having to clean the brush & take it apart in order to keep it working efficiently. I have brick floors with a few area rugs & it was turning out to be a huge pain. I would cuss every time I vacuumed & I don't do that too often.
SOO, I tried the Oreck-free trial, they pay for shipping both ways if you don't like; give you 3 yrs of free tune ups & divide the payment into 12 equal with no interest, plus you get the mini vac & the iron. It was $350, & I love it. It is very light & easy to use, & while it does use bags, it is hypoallergenic & does an awesome job. I never had to clean the brush, & you can go back & forth from floor to rugs without changing settings. With brick floors it has been great. I just had my 1st year tune up & service is great also. My vac looked absolutely brand new.
Hubby loves the mini vac, & uses it more than I do.
I still use the Dyson if I have a huge mess that I don't want to fill a bag up with, but for the most part, it is sadly...retired.

I got a dyson animal for my birthday. I really love it! It picks up soooo much stuff out of our carpet--every time.

I have had about every brand over the years. Electrolux, Hoover, Bissell, Kirby, Oreck, Rainbow and a Dyson. Currently have the Dyson and Rainbow and love both. Actually have two Rainbows, one will be going to my daughter and an ancient Electrolux is somewhere in storage. The Dyson with the rolling ball I understand is harder to manuever, especially if you have arm strength problems. I don't see it anymore, might have been discontinued. And their handeld one, sold at Target, does not get good ratings. Only thing I've had clog it is styrofoam packing peanuts. Will have to say that the Rainbow sucks up more dirt than the Dyson, have done the testing myself. Mine was a freebie off Freecycle, but I paid a bit over $200 to have it refurbished. Just got the other last weekend, for $200, from a man who's wife would not used it.
You got an excellent deal Janice, no doubt. Print off the instructions so you know how to disassemble it occasionally to wash out the filter and such. I paid, I think, $400 for it at Lowes about 2 years ago and had a $100 Lowes card rebate-which I put towards a new carpet shampooer.
Right place, right time and you got a killer price.

It's interesting to read the opinions on the Dyson. I have wanted one forever. If it is heavy I could not use it. Tore my right rotator cup a few years back and a heavy vacuum really aggravates it. Maybe I'll think about the Oreck. Which brand did you get? I had a Rainbow and hated it. Nothing worse than emptying water with dirt and hair in it - yuk!

I think my new Nanny job comes with a Dyson so after I start I can give some advice. We have central vac which I have hated every since I was 17 and my mom got one. I'm almost 50 now and they are they are the same as years ago. Long hoses that you drag through the house and hit every corner of dry wall. I am little and it's sooo big and heavy for me. Until last month I have had a cleaning lady who was really the only person who used it unless my DH was cleaning his shop. We let the cleaning lady go in exchange for saving the money she cost to use for vacation. 3 hours $75.00. DH was a bit concerned but I assured him I can clean for 6 hours a month if we could save the money and get back to vacations. Yesterday I had to use the beast and it's got a short in the hand piece and you have to hold the handle and pull on the hose and vacuum at the same time. UGH!!!!! Maybe her cost wasn't so bad just to vacuum. DH will be off today to get it fixed or he will vacuum the rest of the house. The attic was enough for me.

That's funny Betty Jo! I actually love the central vac systems! LOL You can buy lighter weight hoses now that aren't as huge and heavy. I am only 5 foot tall so I know what you mean about the older hoses being big and heavy though! The only thing I don't like about the Central Vac systems is when you get a clog somewhere in the miles of tubing between you, the wall, and the canister.
