i can't remember if i posted here or on one of my other forums this idea .. but these are so EASY .. and INEXPENSIVE and ever so GRANDE a gift to give! wonderful gift for the hostess at holiday parties you attend .. for a favorite teacher .. family and friends!

i bought beautiful little linens ... elegant little linen napkins and doilies ... i hand-sew them up into sweet little 'bags' (you can use the machine too .. but you often lose a gorgeous edging if you do!) .. then get some quality silk ribbon and run it through the top of the linen bag (which you have turned to make a place to run your ribbon through!)

i have been collecting these for years .. but recently (in Toledo) found a LOT more pieces!! i buy single serving pieces in silverplate ... for $3. to $5. each .. this incudes pie servers, ladles, serving forks, pickle forks, sugar and jam spoons .. any piece that is pretty and a little 'unusual' ... then you simpy insert them into the little sack .. and VOILA .. a lovely gift for just a few dollars each! and it looks to be SO much more EXPENSIVE! most women love pretty tableware. soon's i get the little 'sacks' sewn up .. i'll take some pics to show you what i mean .. i have about 20 gurlfrenz that i am gifting these to and it will cost me about $50. .. a FRACTION of what it would cost me to buy something NEW. AND the sewing is minimal .. and quick! xo

I do have a lot of linens from Richard's aunts, that idea is something I might try.I can get lots of pretty serving pieces out of the silverware bin at the thrift.

i love the idea....but i'm thinking in a little different direction.. my daughter is in high school and she is just finishing the "gift exchanging" thing with her friends, which gets to be expensive by the time we're done. i'm going to suggest that at garage sales, flea markets, etc. she pick up a few inexpensive, cute/interesting looking little pins for jackets and sweaters. we'll buy some "after christmas" cotten fabric (with maybe a holly print on it), put a layer of tulle (in green?) over it and make a little bag like you are suggesting. i'll tell her to make a small matching pillow to attach the pin and that can be her gifts to friends next year! it's not as grande or as "romantically pretty" as what your talking about, but i think it would be cute for her age group???

Great idea! For my sister's family, I decided to make fabric gift bags -- hers from a lovely white cotton w/ lily of the valley woven into the fabric. I made it like a pillowcase to custom fit the bag I made her -- then sewed it closed with green thread so it's easy to clip open; used lace as the ribbon and fastened with a sewed-on button right in the middle. She will love it, I know, and I love not buying more Christmas paper. For her husband, I sewed a little bag for his bottle of Spice House Chicago Pizza Pizzazz herb/dried tomato mix. I'm using little gold pins to pin on the gift tags, since tape won't work so well on the fabric. My niece is getting a gift card, and I did use paper for hers, but used rickrack and a button for trim.

Frannie, I love buying silverplate serving pieces! We get them in all the time at the consignment shop. Right now there's a great little set of sugar tongs. I may have to snap that one up. And you've given me a great idea for friends' and extended family gifts.

You are too creative!
