gosh gurlz .. i visited my favorite antiques shoppe in toledo today .. and they have the most MARVELOUS books for a few dollars .. none more than ten .. and the ten dollar ones are the kind you would pay about $40 for in a bookstore. i got a few for gifts .. GREAT children's books .. and my most favorite was 'olde-timey' professions and terms that you rarely hear connected with people today. it is such a fun read! beautiful ART books .. GARDENING and COOKING .. and poetry .. history .. architecture .. there was even a huge picture book .. 100 years of FARMER magazine .. for only $5.00!!

if you are in a quandry as to what to get for loved ones .. SHOP all year long! when you see a great book that would be of interest to someone on your birthday or hoiday list .. buy it then and there .. designate a drawer or cupboard in your house for these .. and when you need a gift .. you have your very own 'store' to go into .. and it hurts a LOT less if you buy these in little 'bites' .. that way .. if you don't like 'crowds' at holiday rush time (I LOVE THEM!!!) .. or find yourself getting all a-twitter and 'conflusterated' .. by the overwhelming rush and amount of people to get a gift for .. it will be much more pleasurable for you (and for the receiver .. because you have lovingly thought of them and gotten them something they would appreciate)

oh .. and another fun way to shoppe (for me) is to choose a 'color' theme .. sometimes i will go into an antiques store .. with a 'color theme' in mind ... winter BLUES ... snow WHITES .. valentine REDS .. AMERICANA: red white and blue .. BLACK AND WHITE .. sunny YELLOW .. it's such fun! (when i used to take girls on 'shabby shopping 'trips .. we'd play this 'theme' game too .. sometimes it would be the color (all our shopping trips had a 'theme). sometimes it would be anything GARDENY .. something with flowers on it or garden tools ...

one of my most favorite shoppes in maryland always had fabulous seasonal displays .. they would get the most glorious BOOKS with the covers in 'color themes' .. what a great display they made .. along with other theme things .. .such as:

WINTER BLUES ... lots of blue books and snowy white decorations ... and such

oh t'is fun to shoppe when in a festive mood!

Frannie, I'm with ya. I buy gently used gifts for many of my family and friends...We have a couple of antique shops that I just want to go and live in...so much pretty stuff. I love the word conflusterated, it describes how I get just to a T =)

Wishing you joy in small things and peace in your heart

another fun 'shopping theme' .. is linens .. today .. i did just that .. got a lovely set of pristine white pillowcases for my daughter's guest bed (only $10. for the set! ... got a precious and very feminine 'tea set' ... center cloth and two matching napkins .. for a newly wed couple ($5. for the three pieces .. and i am sure they are victorian!!! ... got ten wonderful little linens with embroidery on it for 'pockets' .. i am going to make .. and fill with BEAUTIFUL SILVERPLATE serving pieces that i found for $1. to $5. each! beautiful butter knives .. delightful 'pickle' forks .. gorgeous serving spoons .. precious 'pie servers' ... SEE .. store-bought gifts don't have to be EXPENSIVE .. often a lot less than 'hand-made' items that we purchase!

hand-made is delightful too of course .. but i am giving ideas that are elegant, beautiful, wonderful and VERY inexpensive .. but look VERY expensive!

sometimes i shoppe for PICTURE FRAMES in antiques shoppes .. then i find the perfect photograph of someone's loved one .. to put in it .. MOST people would appreciate this as a gift. if not .. there is always 'something'everyone on your list would appreciate receiving ... i love watching what someone picks up and looks at ... seeing what they decorate their homes with .. listening to their interests .. then shopping with those ideas in mind.

and remember .. gifts don't always have to COST a lot of money (sometimes NOTHING!) ... just baking a sweet treat and visiting an older person who does not get out often (bring them flowers from your garden or from your local grocer). just wrap them in pretty paper and write a sweet note to them. leave it on their front porch .. or knock on the door .. you will probably be invited in for 'tea' and to share the cookies! most of all .. your gift is your friendship and company ... letting them know you care.

LOVE COUPONS .. we have done this every few years ... we come up with things that we know a friend or family member likes or needs .. such as:

kid coupons: movie and popcorn (can be at home or at the theatre)
a visit to Chuck E. Cheese for pizza and games
a trip to the zoo with a picnic lunch
a trip to the beach (with a beach towel, sand pail and flip-flops)

for lovers: dinner for two prepared at your home .. candlelight .. music .. their favorite foods .. YOU dressed as a waiter/waitress
a midnight picnic supper delivered to their door on a night of their choice
CHOCOLATES .. and baby sitting for them while they go on a 'date'

for a special 'gurlfren' ... a photo album of pictures from your childhood together
a week-end get-away with a few gurlfrenz: (you can even do this in your own home .. ship the honey and kids out for the night on a camping trip or a visit to the in-laws) ... get some music and movies from your teen years .. do each other's hair and nails .. stay up all night a giggle and tell stories from your youth!

let's hear some ideas you have for inexpensive and special gifts that will make 'forever-memories' xo
