Lutalyse?? It was suggested that I have my AI guy give Mona this injection to bring her heat on so that I can get her bred..it is supposed to start it up within 80 hours IF you are close enough to time. If not you do it again 14 days later and it will catch it for sure then. (it would have to fall within one of those times) I hate to resort to that..but when I read up on it online there is no milk withdrawall time since it is a naturally occuring thing in the cow's system..just more at the needed time to bring on the heat..and there dosn't seem to be side effects or anything..just wondering if anyone has used this with their dairy animals. I don't have any experience with it at all. My AI guy says he can do it..has the shot and all...so it is totally possible. I hate to breed her much later..don't want to end up with a winter calf next year..as it is her calf would be born in Sept now if she is bred right away!! So...what do you think gals...?????? any thoughts????
Lutalyse is the trade name of a hormone produced by the uterus that basically restarts the cycle of an animal. We used Lutalyse to synchronize our beef herd so that they would all come into heat in a small window and we could get them bred and calved at nearly the same time. It is a very popular and easy way to bring an animal into heat. Just be sure not to get any on yourself. Us girls always had to wear gloves when we used it because it can be absorbed through your skin and if you get a big enough dose, can do some nasty things to your repro tract or other smooth muscle. You really shouldn't have to worry about that if your AI man is doing it, though. That is very rare, though. 80 hours is a little longer than what we usually had to wait for a heat to be seen, but you are right about giving the second shot 14 days later if you don't see a heat the first time. How long has it been since she calved last?
Lutalyse is probably the easiest and least complicated way to bring an animal into heat artificially. Especially if you just have Mona to worry about. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
Thanks SO much Toni. I had pretty much decided to do this but just "needed" to hear from someone who had used it. I had heard about not geting any on yourself too. My AI guy is a friend and said HE would do it (yay!) I give my sheep and goats shots but boy cows have tough hide so I am glad he will do it. She calved on May 19th this year. (her second freshening)
