We are spending the holiday with friends over Thanksgiving, and I am in charge of bringing dessert, but I'm kindof "appled" out, and there will be sweet potatoes as a side dish, so a sweet potato pie is out--is there another autumny type dessert that would be good? Our hosts aren't fans of pumpkin pie--for some reason, I'm having trouble thinking out of the...pie.

Any help is much appreciated!

There are pecan pies, a nice trifle might be welcome, crumbles or cobblers go well. Cheese cake isn't a bad option, you can even make it with ricotta or low fat creme cheese and it isn't even bad for you...lemmee think....hmmmm. I was considering sending up a home made jelly roll to my land lord and family

I had been already to Epicurious (it's my fave--obviously, yours too, Annika?), and for some reason, I keep thinking ginger bread (like the cake, not the dudes), with a honey/lemon/marscapone cream topping--does that sound like something you girls would eat? PLUS, I can make it tonight, even.

There will be 4 adults and 2 kids (who incidentally only eat cheese), so I'm thinking the simpler the better.

I make a yummy pumpkin roll every Thanksgiving & Christmas. I do not like pumpkin pie, but the roll is very good & everyone loves it. let me know if you'd like the recipe. it's also easy to take with, I usually don't cut it until I get to my destination. Also easy to make the night before & leave in the refrigerator until you are ready to go.

Yum! Gingerbread sounds so simple and good! with which ever topper!
And yes, I'm a relentless recipe hound. I grew up eating Wonderbread, american cheese and tv dinners and taught myself to cook early on out of desperation.
Now I'm wanting gingerbread....

Kelly, the pumpkin roll recipe sounds wonderful...I really like pumpkin anything, pretty much all the time. I'd love to have the recipe, if you don't mind. I'll make it for Friday evening's potluck--we're going to a house party near the university, where the host is bringing in an Irish folk band. Food, dancing and festive music. I've been wondering what I'll take, and I think that would be great!

Here you go... If you have any ?'s about it... feel free to email me.
Not sure where the recipe originated, a friend gave it to me as her mom's recipe.

Preheat oven to 375. Spray 15x10-1/2x1 pan with Pam or line with parchment paper & spray with Pam

Cake:
~2 lg. eggs
~1 C. sugar
~2/3 C. canned pumpkin non-spiced
~1 tsp. lemon juice
~3/4 C. flour
~1 tsp. baking powder
~1/2 tsp. salt
~2 tsp. cinnamon
~1 tsp. ginger
~1/2 tsp. nutmeg
~1 finely chopped nuts

Filling:
~1C. powdered sugar **
~8 oz. cream cheese at room temp
~4 Tbsp. margarine or butter
~1/2 tsp. vanilla

**Also extra powdered sugar for rolling cake.

Beat eggs on HIGH for a full 5 minutes. Add sugar & beat another 2 minutes. Stir in all other cake ingredients but the nuts. Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle with nuts.

Bake 15 minutes or until cake starts to pull from sides of pan and springs back. Flip out of pan onto clean dish towel covered with powdered sugar (not from filling ingredients). Roll cake together with towel from short end to short end. Let cool 20 minutes.

Unroll cake & spread filling mixture over cake. Re-roll cake without towel. Wrap towel around cake & let set for a couple of hours (I don't normally do this part because I end up staying up so late making it for the next morning). Sprinkle roll again with powdered sugar wrap in foil or plastic wrap & refrigerate.

Gooey Butter Cake!!!!! Do a google search for Paula Deens Gooey Butter Cake and she's got a LOAD of yummy alternatives, including Pumpkin. Totally yummy, very decadent & rich, and has gotten rave reviews to whomever I've served it to.

My reply is kind of last minute, no? I love carrot cake in the fall, especially if made with maple syrup for part of the sugar. Or any spice cake. Yuuuummmmm..... spice cake. Bread pudding might be a fun play on the stuffing theme.

I think I'm making a bread pudding with brandy sauce and a rustic Galette tart with lady apples and wild apples. I'm a bit punkined out at the moment

I made a Candied Apple Jello Salad or also called Red Hot Apple Salad. Its has cream cheese topping and the jello taste like candied apples.

Thanks for all the suggestions--chess pie sounds yummy today, but I was pretty "pie'd" out by the time Thanksgiving rolled around. I think I made 10 pies the week before the holiday!!!

Well, I ended up with homemade gingerbread, and MAN was it yummy. I did "kick" up the spices more, because, if I want gingerbread, I want it to taste like ginger, not just cinnamon, cloves, etc...I also made a creme freche sauce with honey and bourbon to pour over the top. YUMMY.

I took it to our friends for Thanksgiving, and then the remainder I cut up into bite sized pieces for a house party near the university, where some musicians from England and Ireland played traditional folk music. Sooo much fun, and it was gone in a second!!!
