Last year Mona's heats were really easy to catch...oh my she was loud and walked the fence calling for a man!! But this year she has been very quiet about it, and more ladylike I suppose..so I still have not been able to catch her heat and get her bred (for those of you who don't know..there is a very short window of time to get the deed done!) so...we are looking at a late August calf next year!! I have decided to look on this as a blessing since it will make our summer easier next year. We can go camping more and further away, and won't have to rush home twice a day for milking, and can sleep later if we want even (haha) and baseball season won't be as hectic if we have an out of town game...oldest daugher's softball games are sometimes quite a distance. So...I think it will be good. On the other hand..I like spring babies..so I will miss that. HOpefully my sheep will be bred and will give us spring lambs and I will have that. (since it is all about ME..haha) If any of you have any special tricks about catching her heat please pass them on. I can't believe after last year's noise that this is the same cow!!!
She is perfect of course, in every way...still giving 4 gallons a day on once a day (evening) milkings and I wouldn't change a thing about her.

I have to admit, Evelyn is one LOVERLY heifer calf (hee hee, Mary Beth!), and I think that Mona's going to give you (Jenny) another beauty in August. Maybe she's just learning "subtlety" as a young cow - you know, so as not to attract the "wrong" kind of man !!!!!

She is healthy for sure..just I think like Libbie said, being more subtle now. I have bull posters for her in the barn...really!! So she knows what sort to attract..haha She will actually be bred AI (artificial insemination) so she won't meet the bull..but still, posters of hunky guys arn't bad, right??

Patsy has different heat temperments too depending on the cycle. They have become more subtle also. The only way we knew the last couple of times is when the steer was always at here rear end.I know it is hard to watch her constanly and with no other cows around it might be tough to tell. Do you keep track on the calender? There are medicines you can give her to force a heat but I am not sure exactly what they are. I know my hubby's cousin has used them in the past. Try googling it. I wish I could be more help. I just had Patsy and Etta bred so it looks like August babes for us. I am excited because they both had heats a few days apart.I can't wait. Good luck!

Jenny, you could have her vet checked and see where she is at in her cycle, or if she has any cysts. Do you ever see any blood? Then you could figure for next month after that. Bend over a bit, in front of her and see if she will try to jump you, when you think she is in heat. that sounds funny. But when we had the dairy, walking and feeding in front of the cows was enough for them to show heat. Summer has not been in heat yet either. She calved the end of Sept. I have been putting her out with some calves that we weaned, so hopefully some one will notice her. But I have been thinking of getting her checked by the vet. Good luck, and I hope she gets bred soon,

Our AI guy mentioned the injection he can give her to bring on heat. I do have her last heat on the calendar (the one that was too early for me!) since it has been late enough I havn't caught it. I am hoping I can give the date to my AI guy and he can help me figure out from there (many months ago!! when would be a likely time. I hate to resort to giving her the shot to bring it on...but I am getting to the point where it sounds like I may do just that. I haven't seen blood the past few months...but then I had a terrible flu during that time AND was gone last week and could have missed it. I THOUGHT I had it figured that she could go in heat the 9th or 10th of this month..wrong!! sigh.

At least with AI, you'll have a date to work from, right?. I'm more used to small ruminants, and only faintly recall my great aunt Judy's cows.

The tongue-up-the-nose trick is ever so attractive. Who could resist such a talented girl?
That picture brought back such funny memories of my first visit to my great-uncle's dairy farm (age 7). I was shocked, horrified, and yet strangely envious...

I hate to say this, but I got lucky, and Summer came in heat yesteday. I have the calves, and beef cows around, so maybe that helped. Otherwise I probely would not of noticed. Of course my bull was standing at the fence, with his tongue hanging out and a stupid look on his face. I will bred her next month. I hope you get Mona bred soon. Too bad you can't be raising a steer at the time she needs to be bred back. They don't let those things slip past them. Good luck
