ok I am probably going to be getting a few bantam hens in the Spring..(babies) so..I am wanting to know who all has them here..and what is your favorite breed?and why?
Should be fun to read the input.:0)

I adore bantams. I had for a while, pair of Old English and some Golden Seabrites, but I didn't count on the sheer cunning of an aging basset hound, who made fast work of them. I am making a new pen for a new bunch next spring, and I'm thinking of what, besides more Old English, I may want to do.
The Old English are/were fighting birds and, like all of the banties I've met, have a lot of heart. Thankfully, it is illegal to fight birds these days, but I DO love the birds. I am looking forward to banties again and more stories as well. There are some beautiful birds, I will go looking for pictures and info for you!

| I love Silkies best if they are just for looks or else for hatching eggs, because they are brooding and light. I also like silver spangled hamburgs- I have one hen and she is a great layer and very tough. My dogs got ahold of her and ripped open her back before I got to her. This was many months ago, and she is still running around and doing fine. |

We have a mixed flock, but my favorite is the New Hampshire. The rooster is a beautiful rusty red, with a green cape. He dosen;t crow very loud, which my neighbors like. The hen is like a Rhode Island, but more of an orangey/rusty red.
We've also had bantam cochins and rhodies that are good layers and setters. |

I'm enjoying these answers. thanks for the input thus far..quite a wide variety to look into already.
Anyone raise the de uccles? or Araucana?
I have even been thinking of the frizzles, I think I'd wind up laughing out loud every time I saw them...and it would certainly make for fun days..ha.
Of course whatever I choose... they'd be for eggs and because of the way I treat my pet duck..definitely pets as well. They would never wind up in a stew pot.
I do want something that would be a good layer for quite a long time...and not just a pet all the time, but at least earn it's keep for a while.

Hi Tina,
I have Araucanas, purebed from McMurrys hatchery, they are all different colors and lay those good and pretty blue or green or pink eggs.
They are a good natured little breed.

My favorites are my 4 girls, LOL! They are cochin bantam hens and the sweetest, little, talkative things ever! They make me giggle and always seem to make me happy. They are so gentle and nothing but a bunch of fluffy butts....they are just darling little creatures, a joy to watch and appreciate all them feathers they got :) I got my girls when they were a day old and have had them for almost close to 2 years in April.....They are my chickee babies and you would love them! In the first pic the partridge on the bottom steps is not with us anymore, that was Penny, but I still think about her often, she died of an anuerysim, but they said she went quickly. The Blue is Duckee, The Barred is Miss Mabels, the darker partridge is Ginger and the Mottled is Dottie Bird. They are very good layers and setters, they would be good mommies if Mister Rooster was still around, but he had to go, LOL! Sorry my pics are so big

We have a mixed flock too but I have to agree with Melissa that the cochins are my favorites. I love all their "fluff" and they always look so fat and happy. Our old english hens are adorable as they are so tiny and petite. Silkies do make great brooders but if you don't have a rooster you don't really need that, they are fun to look at too. Don't have any experience with the 3 breeds you're thinking about but you could just get a few of each! I too love Melissa's picture of the fluffy butts, you should send that in to Backyard Poultry magazine ( a great mag by the way)!!

P.S. Tina Michelle, you know that if you order directly from a hatchery you will probably have to order at least 25 chicks ( they don't have to be all the same breed). This ensures that they keep warm in shipping.

I just love hens. I'm counting the days til spring when i can send my order off to McMurry's. It'll be wild turkeys, probably Spanish Blacks, a whole bunch of banties and a few Wyandottes.
Happiness is listening to hen chatter. They are so sweet

yes Kelly, I was aware of that.. thank you though for the reminder..it's good info for others considering ordering from a hatchery...so thank you for that tidbit of info.....
I have a local feed supply store here that has told me that they can order whatever I want, in whatever quantity I need. So if I only want one of something they can just sell the extras to their other customers.
I only will probably get 3 babies...as I already will be adding a new peking duckling to my yard also in the Spring, I already have a full grown male Peking..."Daffy" that I talk about on my blog. He lost his mate to a raccoon about a month and a half ago.
I want to be able to have a very manageable and easy to care for "mini flock".
25 would be way more than I want to handle or have here.
I'm liking the looks of the cochins..so I may look into that breed. Not sure yet.
So many choices.

I have a very mixed bantam flock too. My favorites for sure are the partridge rocks and mottled cochins..I have several of each and they are the calmest, and best layers and good mothers too. (AND>>>as a bonus I think they are the prettiest) I love the tiny ones, the games and the hamburgs too..but just love those two the best. Have fun!!
