I am working on coming up with a good reading list for this winter and I wanted to know what you gals would suggest to throw into the mix.
What has inspired you? Intrigued you? Changed your outlook? or just really rocked your socks?
I am currently working on Tom Robbins Wild Ducks flying backwards which is a collection of poems short stories and non fiction that he has written.

For some good fiction and excellent characters I would reccommend "Tara Road" by Maeve Binchy. They made it a movie too but the book is way better. Maeve is an amazing Irish Author.

I like any of Maeve Binchy's books.
I would add Pride and Predjuice by Jane Austin. I'm reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte now.

I just finished and passed to hubby, Water for Elephants,(fiction) It's a story about a boy who joins the circus and him at 90 or 93, he can't remember. It was great and it made me cheer at the end. Enjoy

I just found her a couple of weeks ago, Jenny, and loved the books. I really like books where setting plays an important part of the story, and in the South, the setting is ALWAYS a character. :)Look for the Lee Smith books too- they are excellent. Most people know or have read "Fair and Tender Ladies" but that's not the best, IMO. "Oral History" is far better.

Peace Like A River was my favorite of our book club reads. Gone With the Wind too. I love Jan Karon's Mitford books and just got the first Outlander book from my mom. The Lord of the Ring has been a favorite since childhood when my dad read it out loud to us. I will keep a tab on this list to see what everyone recommends since we are revamping our book list for club soon. morgen

Don't miss Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. My daughter is reading it right now, and doesn't want it to end!
Along a similar line of Christian historical romance is A bride most begrudging by Deeanne Gist, or The measure of a lady, also by Deeanne Gist.

A second vote for "Peace Like a River" by Leif Enger. One of the best books I've read in ages, and I read several books a week. I also really liked "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. Rhonda

I just finished WATER FOR ELEPHANTS and thought it was very good. The storyline is excellent and it really made me think about the way we treat our elder family members (this was not the main storyline, but a sideline that totally affected me). I read WISH YOU WELL by David Baldacchi and that was good too. Not a mystery like his usual, but a tender story about family in the Virginia mountains. Good stuff. |

have you read "the glass castle"? i forget who it is by.....but it is a true story. by and large i'm more of a trashy novel/romantic reader, however, this book was a real eye-opener for me. i grew up between philadelphia and new york city, and then lived in palm beach, fla for about 10 years and never thought about how the rest of the world lived/grew up. anyway, it's about a girl and her dysfunctional family......it's depressing, but it's funny! (if you read it, that will make sense!) just an idea..... |

"The glass castle" is by Jeannette Walls. Our book club read it and it is a real eye-opener.

Ok, this was a referral from Aunt Jenny, and I'm passing it on because I adored this book...A Gathering of Finches. Fabulous!
In the non-fiction realm, I'm currently reading the Social Lives of Dogs, by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas--well, I was until dh took it over .

Another of my favourites was "Girl with a pearl earring" by Tracy Chevalier. I couldn't put this one down, was caught at the breakfast table with it! It's a fictional story of the girl in the famous painting by Vermeer. My daughter also loved it so much that we even bought the movie.

I've been reading a ton of Virginia Woolf. If you're not already into her, the easiest novel to get into is probably Mrs. Dalloway. |
