Can this be used to make pancakes and biscuits and things? I was thinking maybe it is like bisquick sort of.

Yes, yes and YES!

I've used it to make bakeover crusts, pizza crusts, awesome waffles in my waffle maker, biscuits, cookies, lots of things. My family used to call me the Bisquick Queen for years, due to an unfortunate incident with a coffee cake recipe that had basically one ingredient...Bisquick. Kinda dry....and I am frequently reminded of that fiasco!

Anyway, now I love the Budget Mix; it is definitely pricier but I understand it's now sold (online order only) at COSTCO as well as from MaryJane's Farm. Think of it as a fresher, lighter tasting , organically made biscuit mix, and so yes, it's very versatile.

My family refers to the Budget Mix as Mail Order Bisquick" instead of Budget Mix...but they like it better, too.

They have plain and whole wheat; both very good.

Do you have the Farm Kitchen issue of MaryJanesFarm magazine? It has lots of great uses for the budget mix.

I started out with the unbleached white, then just recently ordered the whole wheat (waiting for it now).

I have experimented with some of my own recipes, too. My favorite banana bread recipe was great using the budget mix, I just replaced the flour amount with budget mix, and eliminated the baking powder, baking soda and salt, since it's already in the budget mix.

Play with it, using some of your own recipes, like I did with my banana bread. You'll be amazed!

Jo ,
Do you have a recipe for the pizza crust?

Lori,
I do have the Farm Kitchen issue. I'll have to get it out and take a look.
Thanks for your help.

I'll pull out the one I used last; I tend to try new ones all the time. (I think that Aunt Jenny posted a good one on her blog a while back, it's good too).

Basically, I substitute Budget Mix for the flour and yeast portions in any baked goods recipe. You could follow the bakeover recipe for example, and roll it out very thin and put it on the bottom, (versus topping your veggie/meat mixture with Bakeover Crust and flipping it after it is baked) OR, follow the bakeover recipe using pizza toppings, flip it to have a Pizza Bakeover!I think MaryJane calls this a Panbread, but you can read more about it in her books or the MJF product site.

I have a question for you gals - do any of you have a coffee cake recipe using the Budget Mix? That's one thing I just love and haven't figured out yet.

XOXO, Libbie

Libbie,
I have one I will try tomorrow, it's a recipe I've used for many years and think it will be great with the budget mix. If it's still wonderful, I'll post it. Need to get some sourdough bread going too, that time of year again. Starter has come out of hibernation and smelling....like sourdough starter. I have a few people waiting for starter to be sent, so will get that done too.

Warning on Bisquick.
I love Chicken and Dumplings; even though I am Dibetic type2
I only fix them now and again
I fixed my chicken and was going to use the Bisquick mix to
make my Dumplings
I don't know what happened; but the dumplings were way to salty
and I didn't add salt to it eighter
If you want to make Bisquick Dumplings
Use the one that is the healthy kind
I don't know if anyone else had that experince or not. Pinkroses

Has anyone else tried the Chicken Pot Pie recipe from the magazine, using the budget mix for the top? I made this on Sunday, it was awesome! I just got my order with whole wheat budget mix, and I tried this recipe, to rave reviews! It served 5 of us for supper, and I've been enjoying the best lunches all this week with leftovers! I used potatoes, a sweet potato, celery, and carrots for my veggies.
