Lori,
Does the wrapper say "made in a facility that processes Soy, etc" or list soy as an ingredient? Web listing does not say Soy is an ingredient. I'm allergic to Soy also, though being processed in a plant where Soy may be in other items would not be an issue for me.

I was able to try three flavors (thanks, MJ!) and they really are good. I tried Cherry Cobbler, Raspberry Jam & Peanuts and Mango Smoothie. They were all good. I think overall Raspberry Jam & Peanuts was the favorite (I had hubbie and kids try them too) but I really liked Cherry Cobbler. Mango Madness was still go too though . . . really not a loser in the bunch! Definitely a great snack for the family with no weird words that are 20 letters long and can't be pronounced!! LOL!

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

Ronna,
Here's what the wrapper says for the Cherry Cobbler taskbar:

Ingredients: *Date Paste, *Dry Roasted Almonds, *Red Sour Cherries (*red sour cherries, *cane sugar, *rice flour), *Rolled Oats, Natural Flavor, *Peanuts.
*Certified organic by Idaho State Department of Agriculture

Then below the ingredients list, it says:

Contains: Soy, Wheat, Peanuts, Nuts

This product is processed in a facility that handles dairy products, eggs, soy, fish, nuts, peanuts, seeds, and wheat.

So, I'm guessing the bar doesn't have soy as an ingredient, but may have come in contact with equipment that processed soy, so could have trace amounts, which they have to state for people with severe allergies.

Hope this helps,

Lori

Thanks for the info Lori. Maybe we need someone at the farm to clarify this for those with allergies. Big difference between "contains" and "may contain traces of" for some. So many variances of food allergies and how we are affected.

Hi Everyone,

You are so right on all counts! The bars are soooo yummy, and clarification for those with allergies is always important!

The most serious allergies I've heard of are for those allergic to nuts. Peanuts and sesame (although technically neither are nuts), are allergies commonly lumped into this grouping, and the allergic reactions can be serious to life-threatening. If I was in this grouping, I would avoid any food produced in a facility that processed any peanuts or sesame (even oils). This is a very challenging allergy.

Many people want to avoid wheat products for various reasons. For some with celiac disease, their reaction to gluten may be triggered by oats. So even though oats are listed in some sources as safe for those on a gluten-free diet, some must still avoid them. Allergies, and the thresholds of their reaction points, are very individual!

I've never heard of soy allergies being of the life-threatening kind, especially if it's likely only microscopic particles that may have drifted into a product through the air. But, who knows, some people may have so much of an allergy to anything even remotely soy that they need to find food processing facilities that are soy-free.

So, for those with serious allergies of any of those items we mentioned, avoid any facility that processes them. For most, who just avoid eating certain foods, the absolute purity of a wheat, soy, and nut-free processing facility is not an issue.

I really "feel for" children with allergies and their mothers, because many people don't understand how serious the reactions can be. Especially during the holidays, common things like baked goods at schools that some moms bring in as a treat for all the children may cause embarrassment for the allergic children who don't want to be seen as "different," or having some health "problem."

So, if I've been wordy here, please pardon me, as it's just to put in a touch of greater understanding for those with allergies!

Farmgirl hugs to all,

~Sunny

Thanks for the clarification Sunny. My alleriies aren't such an issue now as when I was growing up..but then, food labels weren't explicit like they are now. Some foods gave me an asthma attack right away, others were on a second list that would bother me if I also ate another item on the list.
Really hard to stay away from soy, it's in so many things today. I remember my mother making an issue of me having to have butter, not margarine due to the soy. And foam pillows (which were really pricey when they came out) rather than feathers.
While allergy to soy isn't generally thought of as life threatening as with something like peanuts, a severe asthma attack can be fatal if not treated.
I do appreciate the precise wording on Mary Jane's products.
On another note, is it possible to buy the Barron Mills baking powder from the farm?

Hi Ronna,

Yes, the baking powder can be purchased from the farm. We sell it by the ounce and there's no minimum amount.

I know asthma attacks are serious. I witnessed a friend's little boy during one, and it was very frightening. Moms like yours who have to be careful to protect their little "chicks" have so much extra to think about when allergies come into play, don't they?

Let's hear it for all the Mother Hens of the world!!!

Farmgirl hugs,

Oooh, these look good! I used to work in a vitamin store, and they sold "health bars", but they all had "isolates", or other "protein powders" in them , and I just don't want to consume that stuff. And don't forget the scary fake sugars. I'm so glad there's another option out there.
