um...sock puppets for the kids? I think I saw somewhere too where they used them for the little kids looms you can buy cheap(great for pot holder sized things)), cut them short ways, so you end up with lots of loops...I could be mistaken though...

I use some of my husband's miss matched socks for rice packs. I just fill them with rice and sew the one end closed. Then I just keep them in the freezer so when anyone needs an ice pack it's ready. The great part is that it forms perfectly to your body no matter where you are putting it. Or in the summer I just rap it around the back of my neck when I get to hot (no A/C in our house). You could also keep one outside the freezer to heat up as a hot pad.

You could also make bean bags out of them for a kids game. It would be fun to dress up old coffee cans and then make bean bags out of old socks for the toss game. It would be perfect for a toddler or preschool aged child.

One thing I have done with old socks is to stuff several of them inside of on sock, tieing aknot to keep it closed, and giving it to the dog as a chew toy. You don't even need to wash them first if you don't want to...the dogs will love them even more that way! Of course, they can be washed periodically as they will get drooly from the dogs.

Depending on the materials, you can use them for rags (good idea for the unders, also!)

You gave me the idea to knit socks for christmas presents, that's all, lol!

I was going to suggest glove puppets too, or depending on what the socks are made of, they might make good cleaning mits for dusting etc, or for polishing/shining/buffing shoes
