i am knitting a scarf for my son. i am not using a pattern and the scarf is just going to be garter stitch, nothing else. i know that the yarn i am using yields 5 stitches per inch on size 8 needles. i am going to use size 10 needles. is there a way to figure out how many stitches it will yield on this size needle. since i am not using a pattern, i am not concerned about getting the gauge exactly right. i just have an idea of about how wide i want the scarft, so i am trying to figure out how many stitches to cast on. thanks!

I'm a "guess" knitter and don't have a specific link for you, but one way I now like to do garter stitch scarves is by casting on at least 100 stitches (that's the length it will be) on an 11 or 13 needle and knitting several rows to the desired width. That way you aren't constantly flipping and starting another row. I usually do "skinny scarves" this way, but just keep doing more rows for a regular width scarf.
Also, when you cast off using this method, use a larger needle than you knit with so that it doesn't "bow".

For traditionally knitted scarves, slip the first stitch of each row off the left needle to the right needle without actually knitting it. This will make a more even edge along the scarf.
