I posted before about shopping for skirts and tops, you know the type of stuff you might keep around since it's nice. I'm looking for long skirts (like you see MJ wearing in her book and mag) well these are really hard to find shopping in target or old navy (really it's not there at all) So maybe you gals can help. i know if i try hard enough i will come in luck. not too much$! thanks

Hey Shawna,
Do you like to search through the Thrift Stores?? You would probably find alot of what you are looking for and at a great price too! Do you sew any at all? A simple long skirt with an elastic waist is very easy to make if you'd like to know how to do it.

I know there are lots of farmgirls who make a lot of clothes and even Etsy them, but I can't remember who does what, so I am hoping the sew'ers will be able to see the post here :D
*just realized that saying "Sew'ers" without the editing is "sewers" uhm yah...Not what I was meaning to say! lol But the dictionary meaning does mean "people who sew" but since it also means a place where all our waste goes- I have decided to adopt a slight edit so there are no misunderstandings!

I agree with Stephanie, if you can sew at all, making your own is the best way to get what you want. Also, there are a number of pattern companies that cater to those of us that want something that they just don't have at Old Navy. I love both old fashioned and ethnic fashions and have done a fair bit of sewing for Ren Faires and other historical events, so I LOVE patterns

If you do sew, it's worth looking at www.craftster.org/forum in the sewing forum. There are tons of free patterns- circle skirts, a-lines, whatever you might want. What you're describing is what I like to wear too, and I can hardly find them, unless they happen to be in fashion at the time.

I make mine or find them at thrift! If you sew, and sew well, you should be able to eyeball some pretty nice a-line skirts, circle skirts are pretty easy once you get the hang of how much material they actually take. I wear skirts most days.

You gals are great! thanks for your help. You know I do like thrift stores but it seems hard to find the somewhat larger sizes! (i have a hard time saying what size that is--but i'll tell my age anyday!) we seem to have mostly childrens thrift stores around here, but maybe i could get some help with the kids sometime and go into the city, i WILL be checking out all these ideas, THANKS

I'm a size 18, but pattern size 22. There are some easy, very cool patterns out there.
Yesterday I sewed a pair of (easy) slacks with pockets & elastic band and a cool long sleeve top.
Sewing is so much fun, doesn't need to be cleaned ( unless I get the clothing dirty while wearing it), doesn't get undone unless I need to rip something out & is a fabulous, creative outlet.
I agree with you that thrift stores are harder to find things. Old Navy had a sale & I bought turtlnecks for $4, but cut the turtle off, recut the neckline & stitched it. Looks great & I couldn't have bought the fabric for that.
