visited the Janice Holt Giles yearly celebration today .. was a little disappopinted .. first i got LOST for about TWO HOURS! And SECOND .. it was closing down in one hour .. and THIRD .. there were no 'guides' there today to tell us about her home and life there!
BUT .. i did meet a neat lady who was doing FILET NETTING .. she had some beautiful examples of antique filet doilies .. wow! got me to wondering how many of those beauties i have passed up because i didn't know what i was looking at! AND .. today .. on the way home .. i stopped at a Peddlar's Mall and found a sweeeet filet doily for only TWO DOLLARS! I'm going to go through my collection of what i 'thought' was all 'crochet' .. and it is NOT crochet .. it is more life 'fish netting'. but very dainty!
have any of you gurlz ever done it? i found this info on the internet about it:

Netting is an old crafts technique basing on the nets that fishermen have always worked. For decorative netting a different, but similiar Knot is used. When netting doilies in the round the pattern is worked at the same time as the ground. Patterns are done by working several knots into the same loop (shell stitch) or by gathering several loops with one single knot. Loops can be twisted or crossed when being worked into to get more patterns. Another possibility of patterning is using different lengths of loops.
Classical Netting, also called Filet Lace, embroidered net or Lacis is worked in two operations. First the ground is netted in rows going back and fourth. This is very tedious, because no patterning is done at that stage. After that the ground is stretched over a frame. Then the pattern is embroidered onto the ground. There are several different stitches for doing so, and different weights of thread can be used for the embroidery for shading. Embroidered net worked in only one stitch and with one weight of thread can still be very impressive. Filet Lace is sometimes put into the group of the Real Laces. Today the crocheted imitation of Filet Lace is better known than the real thing, which is much finer than crocheted filet.
Filet is very delicate, because the size of only one thread makes the basic element of the work, not several as in other lace techniques (crochet = 4 threads - loop inside of loops; tatting = 2 threads - knots over a central thread, bobbin lace = 2 threads - a twisted pair of threads). It is only knots that keep the single threads together. This makes starching a necessity, so as to keep the form of the lace.
The knot is made with a special tool, the netting needle:

I have these tools it is a small version of what fisherman use to make nets in fact it is the exact same technique just smaller. I have made a few doileys don't know where they are at the moment.

that's what this girl was making today .. fish nets! ha! i asked her "to wear"? ... or "catch fish in"?

I used to go into a Bait and Tackle shop in Slidell, Louisiana and watch the lady and guy make the cast nets. They gave me a shuttle (but not exactly) that they used. The stitch that they used reminded of super large "lover's knots".

lots of times the netting is used for a background for needle filling stitches I have lots of this in my house. On round doilies it doesn't normally have filling stitches just on rectangle and squares.

Thanks for the google images Sunshine. I will have to go through my things one day to see if I really have any of this..it looks very familiar. It's just beautiful. Would love to watch someone making it.

greata site sunshine!!! thanks! i think i must have some and just didn't realize it .. AND .. there is an antiques shoppe in Toledo that i 'think' has lots of it! i'll surely take a closer look my next visit (October 26).

You're not alone Frannie!I knew some of my favorite pieces were different from others I have, but had no idea why. From looking at pictures I can see that those pieces are filet netting. Garsh...learnt somethin' new today!  Thanks ladies!
