In a desperate attempt to get my nails healthy again, and cure a vertical spit that just seemed to never want to fix itself, I went and ordered this old-timey Flowery nail buffer, like one I used to use way back when:

I also got some buffing creme (from the Vermont Country Store, which, surprisingly, didn't offer the buffer itself):

Please note that the Flowery buffing creme also offered on Amazon is a pitiful substitute for this.)
Anyway, girls, I've been using no other nail products but these, keeping edges under control with the fine-grit versions of those big nail files you can get almost anywhere for under a buck. Afterwards, I rub in a oil I got as a free sample a while ago; I suppose anything would do, even olive oil. After a few months of faithful morning and evening buffs, my once-pitiful nails are now smooth, shiny, hard, and GROWING! I have to trim them now to keep them from getting too long for typing, gaardening, housework, etc. I guess they enjoy the extra circulation that the buffing generates. It's so nice to have pretty, shiny nails without having to use any nasty chemical crap on them.
I swear I'm not selling this stuff or getting a residual ;-) I just want to promote natural approaches to health and beauty whenever I can, and this fits the bill.

ps: I should add that vegans will have a problem with the chamois (sheepskin) on these buffers.
