| My nephew and his wife flew in from Arkansas Sept.21 for a week long vacation at our home here on the coast. First visit ever to NC. Both daughters were home and DH. Had great time first few days, on the beach, boating, eating out. We spent Wed. in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach having a wonderful day taking in as much as we could. Got home, fired up the grill just as darkness started to fall. Nephew,wife,daughters decided to tour around our community in the golf cart while I put the chickens on the grill. Everyone was having a great time until....... Golf cart pulls up to our back deck where I am grilling,wife steps off cart and is bitten on her foot by a copperhead snake! She was wearing leather flip-flops and on the second strike the snake bit through her sandle and left his fang holes. It was awful. We rushed her to the hospital 40 min. away to the ER. This was at 8:00. She was admitted,put on iv anti-venom and antibiotics.Nephew stayed with her overnight. DD's and I got home and in bed by 2am. Went back to hospital next morning,stayed all day and she was released at 7pm. We brought her home on crutches. Whew! Poor girl couldn't eat anything for two days She never got upset through the whole thing. I probably would have had a fit and fell in it had the snake bit me! Ifelt awful about what happened. Excluding the snake bite,we had a wonderful visit and they want to come back! I will not be walking around the yard after dark any more.Period. Unless the house is on fire! |

Oh my gosh Tracy! I can't even imagine being snake bit! I am so glad she is okay! Have you called your local animal control to see if they can trap and relocate the snake for you?

Oh, that's horrible! I am always leary about walking about at dusk and in the dark. Since my parent's dog was bitten this summer, I am even more cautious. Glad to hear she did well, the brave girl!

SO sorry! I've really been meaning to buy a zapper to keep in the house now that we live in KS at least the snakes in AZ rattle most of the time - have heard from several sources that shocking the bite area with an electric zap helps minimize the effects and shorten recovery. Glad to hear that she's feeling better!
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

Whowwwwww, that was some darma Tracy, and they want to come back, now that is endurance. What a great job you all did handling the situation. Good job!!!!!

Nice to hear from all of you farmgirls! The story continues:
DH,I,two other couples drove down to Savannah,GA for the weekend. Our youngest daughter stayed at our house to take care of kitties and Snoop. First day in Georgia she calls me in hysterics. She took trash out and stepped right beside a snake at our trash container! She got away from it and called us freaking out. Calmed her down and I swear 30 minutes later she called back with another snake sighting. She was going out to her car in the driveway and a snake was curled up next to her tire. Unbelievable! She was fit to be tied as they say. Now this is a young woman who jumps out of airplanes and is in tears over these snakes. Rightly so. We have got to figure out a way to repel snakes from our property but I think it will be a losing battle as we live in a waterfront community with lots of wooded lots around us. I've been told that a study was done at NC State U and it was found that sulfer or mothballs have not been very sucessful. The study snakes were found curled up and laying in the stuff. Any good tips on solving this problem from you farmgirls would be greatly appreciated. Tracy |

The only think I can think of is calling animal control if mothballs are not working. Animal control should re-locate them for you, especially if you mention that your family has already had one person get a snake bite. I hope they go away and leave your property alone!

Sounds like you may have a den somewhere close to the house - you may want to have animal control come out and see if they can locate it. Perhaps try your county extension office?
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!
