Ladies, I don't know anything about fibromyalgia (hope that I am spelling it correctly) however I learned something interesting this morning and thought I'd post it here, in the event it will benefit other sufferers of this condition.
A friend's mother has been living in pain for 40 years with this condition, and just a few weeks ago she ended up being prescribed Prescription Strength Mucinex (the stuff for coughs)because her doctor said there is an ingredient in this product that helps with fibromyalgia. It's not in the over-the counter version, only the prescription strength version. Apparently there is a definite benefit and doctors are starting to prescribe this. You may want to ask your own doctor if it is something you can try yourself.
My friend said her mom is like a new woman; happy and pain free - to the point of being able to sit in the front seat of a car for a 10-12 hour journey for the first time that my friend can remember.
Has anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of that specifically but that happens alot with medicines. They figure out that it will help something in an off the wall kind of way. They give kids viagra for some kind of cardiac problem. go figure

Here's what i found about Mucinex and fibro: Guaifenesin is what is in Mucinex
Because of its uricosuric effect, guaifenesin was chosen for the experimental guaifenesin protocol in the 1990s as a treatment for fibromyalgia, and proponents of the guaifenesin protocol believe that it cures fibromyalgia by removing excess phosphate from the body. A lesser publicized and thus lesser known fact among fibromyalgia sufferers is that guaifenesin has a skeletal muscle relaxant property, and a form of guaifenesin known as guafenesin carbomate is used for this purpose[Citation needed]. This may explain some of the symptomatic relief experienced by fibromyalgia sufferers who take guaifenesin.

Oh that is wonderful! Guaifenesin is wonderful stuff. I had to be prescribed it a lot when I was little because I kept getting really bad phlemy coughs. Make sure you drink lots of water though! It will dehydrate you very quickly!

You can buy guyfenison OTC without the cough syrup. And a doctor wrote a book on it. You have to be careful, though, because eating and working with certain things causes it to not work. Can't remember what they are (besides toothpaste) it's been a long time since I read the book. But we can find out if you want.

I've read about the guaifenesen treatment for fibromyalgia. I believe there is a food restriction that goes along with it to make it more effective: No plant foods in the nightshade family (no potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). I've also read that guaifenesen doesn't work for everyone. I haven't tried it yet.

Yes, I have heard of this as a treatment for fibro but I have not tried it yet. I guess for the most part I go with the flow - except when I have a real bad pain day and I need a Vicodin - have been achy these past few weeks but the weather in NJ is crazy. Aching like mad tonight.......

We no longer prescribe gout drugs (uricosurics). We now use guaifenesin for fibromyalgia because it has no side effects and is even safe for children. It is marketed for respiratory mucus problems and is available without prescription in various strengths, though some brands may not be effective for fibromyalgia. Currently, we can only advocate three products: the long-acting 600 mg tablets ‘Mucinex’ and one compounded for the Marina del Rey Pharmacy as well as a 400 mg tablet that is free of contaminants from Pro Health. (see Web site: fibromyalgiatreatment.com) We begin patients with 300 milligrams twice a day for one week. Feeling distinctly worse suggests adequate dosage and patients may remain on that amount. This suffices for only 20 percent of patients; if symptoms do not worsen, we increase to 600 mg. twice daily. Reversal begins for 80 percent of patients at one of these two levels leaving 20 percent who will need more. During reversal, symptoms are usually intensified and new ones may be experienced. These are not side effects, but signal that reversal is underway. Better hours eventually cluster into days and finally weeks. During this subjective roller coaster ride, lumps and bumps soften, fragment and gradually clear. Recovery is more rapid than the time it took to develop the illness. Even genetically-slow responders, clear at least one year of metabolic debris every two months. Longer endured disease requires more time to restore. Newer lesions clear first and the oldest ones last.

Interesting...I to EntexLA for a long time, rx'd by my ENT dr for chronic sinus problems. It was taken off the market with all the other meds containing PPA and reformulated. I felt much better all the way around when I took it, will have to check into taking it again. Can't hurt and would be really nice to not have days that I don't have the energy to do much of anything. I refuse to allow the Fibromyalgia to rule my life, but it does raise it's ugly head and cause problems. Thanks for the info.

Well, isn't it encouraging that there is a new treatment for people suffering with this disease. Sorry to hear about your own recent diagnosis, Carol Sue, and I hope that your doctor will be able to give you some good options to keep it manageable.

 HI To All
Has any one tried Cymbalta for Fibromyalgia? I have been on it for a year or so. I went from 100% pain to 25% I also went part time at work in a hospital in housekeeping i am sure has been a big help.Now that it has got cold i am having pain every were but should get better as winter goes on.

Just going through all of the testing and such ...I might have arthritis, but I suspect that it is fibro.
others in my family have it and I'm kind of familiar, but we also have a lot of really bad kinds of Arthritis, which scares me a lot. Trying to get in a closer appointment with my GP and will know more soon...Guaifenesin has caused me chest pain and doesn't play nice with the other meds Im on, but I HAVE heard a lot about Cymbalta and am going to ask for it if it turns out to be Fibro. This living in constant pain is really tearing me down. Good luck to all of you. God Bless

0k girls, d0c checking 0ut the mucinex but I w0nt have an answer ab0ut it until the 5th 0f December. She did prescribe Cymbalta. It was 0ne 0f the w0rse appts I have every had, and I d0n't have th0se kind. Need a rhemut0ligist, I am thinking, we shall see h0w that g0es next time. S0 0nward and f0rward we g0.
