Greetings from the bluegrass state of Kentucky! My name is Jessica and I'm from Kentucky. You all were introduced to my aunt, Miss Wilma, who was featured in this past issue of MJF magazine. I always remember my days growing up and spending summers there at her and Sterl's farm in Western KY. She taught me how to sew little doll quilts, pick blueberries & apples, and have an even more appreciation of the country life, even when I was born and raised on my parents farm. One of the most memorable stories would be that I got chicken pox one hot simmering summer. My uncle Sterl had me convinced that I got them from playing with the chickens earlier in the day!
Let's see...I'm 27 years old and have been married to my hubby for almost 3 years. I'm a big fan of all things rural living. My hobbies include photography, collecting primitive & Americana things, spending time with family and friends, scrapbooking, and much more.
Hope to learn more about my fellow farmgirls and about the simple life.... You can put the country girl in the city, but the country will always remain in her heart and soul.

congratulations on your new marriage-what a busy time for you. sounds like you have awesome memories of farm life-that's what i like best about my new friends-they are full of cool stories.
i live in sw missouri, not far from arkansas, kansas and oklahoma. i've never been to KY; what's it like?

You are going to fit right in here. There is so much to read through and so many wonderful stories here. We all are country girls at heart even if we do live in the city.

Jessica - glad to have you here! Blessings to you on your new marriage, and for having a farmgirl heart that wants to carry on the tradition of a simple life!
My daughter just turned 26. She, also, likes the simple things and strives to make that kind of life for her family.
Come back often and let us know how married life is going for you! I have enjoyed reading about your Aunt Wilma....!

Thank you guys for the warm greetings! I have always meant to get on the Farm Girl Connection and post up, but things got kinda busy with all of the wedding planning. I'm so glad that it is all over with the planning and the married life is much more exciting than what I would ever imagine.
Karen...Kentucky is very unique as you drive from western KY all the way over to far eastern KY. You go from flatland fields full of wheat, hay, and see lots of dairy, beef cattle and other critters in Western KY. Then as you hit about I-75 eastward, you will wind your way through the Appalachian mountains and not much is grown besides tobacco, hay, goats, maybe a few dairy, and several beef cattle. With the tobacco buyout, several farmers are thinking about going out of the farm business all together. With my job, our office actually helps pay farmers in Lexington to diversify from tobacco. Some of the projects have included Sheep, Tobacco barns renovated to horse boarding facilities, honeybees and making wax/honey/byproducts, daylillies, vegetable production, and much more! As I get the time, I will try to post up some of the business things I've learned through college and working with farmers with this position. I do hope that each of you do have the opportunity to visit Kentucky one day. Just driving on the backroads seeing the farms, horses, barns, and all that is beautiful, is just the best stress reliever one can only imagine!! |

Hey there I lived in Glasgow Kentucky for 4 years and one of my best friends lives in London Ky now. I still have many friends in the Glasgow area... I love Kentucky it is such a beautiful state.. I have been all over Ky and LOVe it there.... I say ig ya get a chance go there for a visit....

We are actually having much luck with farmers growing other crops/animals besides tobacco. There is a big boom with honeybees especially in Central KY. Another big boom is Goats...yep, Goats! However, the number one concern right now in Kentucky is farmland preservation, especially here in the Lexington/Fayette County area. We have a program run by the local government "Purchase of Development Rights, or PDR" that pays farmers to not sell their property for development. There is a huge development called "Hamburg" but I call it "Humburg". It is a poorly developed shopping center/housing development complex. Lexington will soon get its 4th, yes 4th, Walmart, 3rd Lowe's thanks to that development. Traffic is horrible now and there are no plans of improving or developing any new roads any time soon, but there are all kinds of development plans throughout the town. Thus, why I say I wish I was back living in the country. I'd say that eventually in a couple of years, my husband and I will move out to the country again as we are living in an apartment for now.
Beef cattle are also booming in KY, as well as chicken farming. There is also a major push in Kentucky for "Kentucky Proud" products and organic products, or straight from the farm to the consumer. Our Department of Ag has joined with businesses, like Krogers, and family owned markets, to showcase KY grown products. There is also a push for Farmer's Markets across the state and many have had great success.
One of the organizations I'm also involved in is the KY Women in Agriculture. Each fall we have a conference different parts of the state with different workshops on agriculture. Last year it was on marketing and the business side of agriculture and diversification. Their website is www.kywomeninag.com if ya'll want more information on the group.

Welcome Jessica,
It's great to meet another Kentuckian. I am presently a transplanted Kentuckian living in SW Indiana, who spends her weekends helping her dad on his farm in western Kentucky. You are absolutely right when you say that you can "put the country girl in the city, but your can't take the country out of the girl".
I graduated from UK and recently visited Lexington on the "college visit" trip with my daughter. It was sad to see the urban sprawl that you described happening in Lexington, unfortunately it is happening everywhere.
Can't wait to learn more about the happenings in KY agriculture from you.

Hey there Donna. Yep Lexington has just sprawled out. You cannot really tell the county line between Fayette & Jessamine County by going down Nicholasville Road with all of the development. I went over to Hamburg Pavillion today and the traffic was just horrible. I miss when it use to be the old horse farm out there. Now it is just a nightmare with parking and construction.
Let me know if you are ever back down this way. I live just outside of Lexington now. Even though I'm not on the farm anymore, I am still involved with ag here. I will try to share some more of my ole adventures on here when I get the chance. :)
