I am watching the movie on Ruffian right now and am already bawling my eyes out just because I know how it ends. It breaks my heart to know that so many horses in racing with such big hearts end up hurt or dying because of the track.

:(

Yeah, I'm with you there. The part that gets me is so many race horses that don't cut it on the track, end up at the knackers...where they get shipped to Canada or Mexico cuz NOW slaughter is banned in the US. Makes sense, huh...(I'm being a bit sarcastic).

I watched Ruffian race and her breakdown. When I heard she'd been euthanized, I just coulnd't believe it.

Oh my gosh- I have wondered if there is real footage of her breaking down- I haven't seen it- but the ESPN movie was more than graphic enough *ugh*. Poor Ruffian! She was such a strong filly with such a big heart. It really is terrible what happened. I don't know if it is true or not- but the ESPN movie made it seem like she had a trouble with hairline fractures all of her racing career. It sounds like she was too powerful for her own body.

One of saddest parts of the story is that they actually did repair the leg and if she had just stayed calm when waking up, she might have been healed enough to be a broodmare, but she still thought she was running. :(

I love watching the horses run, but on the other hand I am always afraid that the horse will end up hurt like Ruffian. We almost saw AFleet Alex get hurt on the race track and of course we lost Barbaro. Those are just the ones that I am most familiar with, but I know there are many more out there that have broken down due to the races.

Ruffian is the reason I don't watch the races anymore. I just loved that horse. I saw that race live on tv when I was a kid and that was just the end of it for me. I just couldn't stand the thought of falling in love with another horse and risk seeing that happen again. I only watched the videos of my uncle's race horses after that. I never went to another track or watched a race on tv again.
