I wanted to let everyone know that Chris donated her kidney last week and is doing well, as is the recipient!! Yeh!!! Both surgeries went well and Chris is back home in Western New York recuperating. I wanted to thank all of you who helped her with your prayers, notes of support and items for the craft sale(which in itself raised $800!) What am amazing gift she has given to a lady who was on dialysis for 16 years. Truly a new lease on life! Thank-you Farmgirls! Angie.
I work at a family owned weekly newspaper in Avon, NY. We are a pretty tight-knit group and one of the gals I work with will be donating one of her kidneys to a friend in NYC. She needs to raise funds for the trip there and back, accomodations for her husband and expenses. She will also we off work for at least 3 weeks and is not allowed to drive for several weeks. We will be fund-raising for her and I wondered if any of you would consider donating a hand-crafted item that we could sell at a craft/bake sale in November? Does not have to be anything huge or ultra time-consuming but maybe if you are making multiples of something you could make an extra for my friend Chris? I do hope that you can help. I am so in awe of what she is doing and would love to help not just her but the lady you will be given a new lease on life! Send me an e-mail and I will give you my mailing address. Thanks a bunch. Angie.
[red]Hi Angie, As the craft sale date approaches, I just wanted to give you and your e-group friends a heartfelt thanks for all that you have contributed toward the transplant endeavor. And I wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate the crafts, prayers, words of support and positive thoughts/vibes that have come my way. All of it is very much appreciated. I am stunned and humbled at the effort that others have made in helping me to cover the financial side of this.
It seems like a huge deal to DONATE something you've spent many hours lovingly crafting with your own hands. I am not crafty in that fashion (though as a writer, I do consider myself creative)... One Christmas (2004 maybe?) I made a robe for my son, Cory, because my mother gave me her old sewing machine. (I felt an obligation to create something with it.) It is probably the ugliest and worst-made robe on the planet and Cory (now 15) has outgrown it, but he still wears it from time to time (even though it is now almost a tunic and barely covers his bum). Shamefully, I have not used the sewing machine since.
Things are coming together as the transplant date (Dec. 11th) approaches. I now know that John and I will be staying in the Helmsley Tower right across the street from the hospital. Perfect! We got a discounted rate (though it is still expensive) and the suites are pretty nice with little kitchenettes and a king size bed. There's a grocery store on the same block, so we won't have to eat out all the time. Our transportation to/from the airport has been looked after and one of the transplant social workers there is looking into getting us financial help from a new "donor assistance" program. (If it works out, they will pay for the hotel and meals and airfare if necessary.)
Because of the nature of the trip, we're not planning anything adventuresome, but we DO intend to visit Central Park. John is a forestry consultant, so it's almost a requirement that we see the acres of urban forest and miles of walking trails. Plus, the walking will be a good way to whip myself back into shape after the surgery.
Anyway, thanks again, Angie, to you and Janet and all who've helped out with this. For a while I was feeling a little desperate and, admittedly, a bit regretful that I'd made a commitment to something I couldn't pull of financially. I should have had more faith that things would come together. No matter how it all turns out in the end, I know that RIGHT NOW Deb and her sister, Georgia are high on hope, and so am I. (It gets to be rather weary when you're on the transplant list waiting for some unknown date for life to get better.) As we move closer to the surgery date, we're all feeling very positive and looking ahead with excitement at the possibilities. Thank you for that.
Blessings, Chris[/red]
Well, the sale is over! We raised just over $600 which is awesome! Thank-you to all of you who contributed your lovely items!Everyone kept asking me where it all came from! I was glad to share about the Farmgirls and I think we may have some new members joining the forum! Thank-you all. Angie |

Absoloutly! When is the fund raiser and email the address to send items. I have a young friend,30 (she was in 1st grade with my oldest son)who has lived on dialysis for over 8 yrs-she is very ill now-has had 2 transplants but neither were successful in the end. They have told her nfor years that she could not expect to live like this- but apparently God has other ideas- she is in the hospital right now but improving from a recent infection. Pray for her if she comes to mind. Her name is Amy. Email me any info I need about donating. Tks so much for giving us this chance to put out needles to good use!!! Blessings Autumn

My father-in-law was on dialysis for 12 years before his death, so I can't tell you how much I admire what your co-worker is doing. I'm not very crafty, but I'm close enough to Avon that I might be able to come to the sale and buy some of these items! Let us know when it's going to be and where. |

Angie, I am 45 years old and just gave my husband my kidney on August 29th. I was home by September 1st. Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston NJ. They are #1 in New Jersey for transplants. I have just been released back to work starting the 27th of September. Is this fund raiser for her or the person in need of a kidney? All her medical/hospital bills will be covered by the receivers insurance. Send me a list of suggestions and a mailing address and I will do my best to help. She is a brave person. We need more people out there willing to donate. A few days of pain is worth the many years of life she will be giving. She is doing a wonderful thing!

Many thanks! Autumn,it is amazing how many of us just go through life and do not realize the challenges that others face. It;s a bit humbling really. Thank-you for your offer to create something! get those needles working! probably looking at mid/late November so no hurry (unless you were just looking for a new project!) Amy, I will make sure that you get the details & directions for the sale. It will be great to perhaps meet you! Angie.

Kathy, I am so glad that your surgery went well, and what a gift of new life for your husband. We are raising money for Chris who is the donor. She says that all she will receive will be about $150 towards expenses. We are in Western NY, and she will be going to NYC or the transplant. She will have to travel and will hotel accomodations for herself for a couple of days but also for her husband who will be going with her. She will be of work for at least 3 weeks and may not have enough vacation to get paid. I am making a quilt to raffle off and then we will be having the craft/bake sale where I work which my bosses have said we can open up to the general public which is just awesome! I think anything hand-crafted or gift baskets with goodies will work. Soaps, jewelry, cute decorative 'chachkies', scarves, you name it, I am sure it will be lovely. Thank-you for your offer of help. I will send you my address to mail things to. Angie.

Angie I'll get a few needle keepers made and maybe a few other little things. I think I still have your address from the doll apron swap. Mary

Angie, I'd love to send some of my stuff to help out in your benefit craft sale. email me your address info and I'll get some things out to you sometime in the coming week. I too admire your friend. I have an uncle who's doctors have been keeping an eye on his kidney function and they tell him that it is likely that he will need a transplant sometime in the not so distant future. I have stock of some of my polymer clay pins and possibly some other stuff as well which I can send.... |
