When did you introduce the sippy cup?
A lot of what I am reading says to not put juice in a bottle, but rather do a sippy cup. Nora is 6 months old now and has pretty good coordination, but usually put the pacifier in her mouth backwards. Should I try a sippy cup with handles and a soft mouthpiece?
I am still breastfeeding but I do want to start exposing her to more foods, textures, flavors. When she is sitting on my lap and I am eating she grabs my wrist and pulls my hand to her mouth. She _really_ wants to eat. I have given her little tastes here and there and she has tried rice and oatmeal cereals.

I started my kids on sippy cups (they have much nicer ones these days!!!) by giving them a cup with meals ( I fed my babies early though) and a bottle at cuddle/sleep time. I bet she would love to try one..they catch on quick. Those soft ones would be nice to start with for sure.

Just read the other day where they now have insulated sippy cups, wish they had them when my kids were little. Guess it keeps milk cold for up to 16 hours.

I think sippy cups are okay for kid about the same time they would normally start solids (baby foods, I mean)- so about six months or so. I had a terrible time with my second one, who refused to drink from a sippy at all until I just quit giving her a bottle option. That was at a year old. It took a while to get her changed over.

Alee - I started introducing the sippy cup with meals at around 6 months. As soon as they can hold a bottle on their own they can hold the sippy cup.

I bought one today and some juice so I will see how she does! :) She is napping right now, thank goodness- so I will give you an update when she wakes up :)
Well, Nora woke up from her nap and she seems to be getting the hang of the sippy cup. She isn't quite coordinated enough to handle it all by herself yet, but she is learning quickly! I wish they made a size smaller in the sippy cups as this one seems huge for her little hands. The spout top didn't slow her down at all. I just hope this doesn't lead to her chewing on me when she nurses!!

My youngest son, now 4 years old, started drinking out of a sippy cup when he was 6 months old. I breastfed him so, he never had a bottle. I also nursed my second son & he started with a sippy cup at 6 months too. After they drank juice, I would wipe their gums down with a damp cloth. If we were out, then I would give them some water to rinse their mouths out. My boys had no problem weaning at 1 years old since they were so used to drinking out of a cup by then. Good luck!

| I'm definitely a "no bottle!!" mom. . .my kids started with sippy cups around 5 months, water, water, water! You may want to check with your doc or midwife, but I don't think they need juice at all right now. You're nursing and your breastmilk is full of all she needs. My kids loved water from the cup and still do like a lot of water, which is good for them also! It never interfered with nursing and was just kind of a fun thing as well! I know this isn't a topic for first foods, but although many people say cereals like rice, barley, etc. to begin, other things are super as well as first foods, just stick with same regimen of introduce one till you;re sure they're not sensitive, then another, . . . my kids all started on butternut squash (yummm) and my youngest then moved on to trout (okay, my husb. is a trout farmer, so. . .), but don't get stuck thinking that rice cereal is the only place it's at! All right, I'll get off my soapbox; just say it, "enough already, Sheila!" |

I was a bottle Mom for the most part. My son weighed over nine pounds when he was born, and didn't care where if it came directly from the cow, a bottle, or me. (breastfeeding and I didn't set well with each other but I tried for two excruciating weeks.)
My daughter was bottle fed from the starting gate. I was glad she did too, she was the s-l-o-w-e-s-t eater in the world. A four ounce bottle would take an hour and a half. Not much has changed, she still grazes throughout the day. LOL
OK I promise, I DO have a point here....
We never used sippy cups, and went straight to regular cups -exposing them to a little sip here and there, starting at about nine months. We went through a lot of kitchen towels in a week catching dribbles and drips, but they catch on fast, and what is one more load of wash? Just be patient whatever you decide. The sippy cups they have now are really cool, at least the ones I have seen are.
My son was just over a year old when he decided he was done having a bottle. My daughter chucked hers across her room at around ten months. They both have been drinking out of cups since then.
