I've looked at knitty.com quite a bit, but some of the stuff, ok, well, most of the stuff, is still too advanced for me. I'm working on my technique, and I get a little buffaloed by patterns.
However, I haven't really found a site, besides knitty, that has pretty cool things, that aren't too "old fashioned".

The first one I was going to mention was knitty! There are some basic patterns there- they're just hidden in all the fancy stuff. If you see something you like, go in and look at the pattern... it may not be as difficult as you expect.
Try www.magknits.com There is a variety of skill levels there, along with some decent stuff to knit (not too trendy and not too traditional). I'm working on the sweater called Stargazer from Magknits (check out the pattern archives).
Another of my fav sites for ideas and patterns is www.craftster.org/forums - if that link is wrong, just go to www.craftster.org and then click on the forums. If you scroll down, you'll see a forum for knitting- loads of things on there. Most of the craftster people design things and put the patterns on the site for free... if any of the things listed sound interesting, click on them and see if the person has a pattern. Most of them will say "tutorial" or "pattern" in the subject line. Check out the knitalong part of the forum as well, lots of times there are patterns listed with those.
Good luck and have fun!

PS- Most of the time, figuring out knitting is just about going step by step and not trying to do anything ahead of where you are. If you try something advanced and get to a problem, you can post to a place like crafster or www.knittersreview.com and they can walk you through your problems. |

Hi All, I am a passionate knitter and weaver too. I am fortunate as well in that I raise alpacas, which of course provides me with an enormous stash of yarn for myself and my little farm shop too! For a great knitting site, full of patterns and great tips, try Interweave Press' www.knittingdaily.com. I've found some very helpful knitting helps there, plus the editor has a great sense of humor. I thought of another one. One of my fav pattern designers has free patterns on her site- www.glampyreknits.com Scroll down and you'll see a freebie link. All of hers are knit in the round, thus making the seaming virtually non-existent. It's a great way to knit, especially for someone like me who's not keen on seaming.

This is GREAT! Thanks you all-- Now, if I can get some patterns printed off before we go on vacation this weekend, I'll be in business!
