Hello, Has anyone ever used beet water from cooking beets to dye muslin, wool, wood, or cotton? Any suggestions on how to do it? The water leaves my sink such a pretty color I hate to throw it out. Thanks.

I think the same thing every time I cook beets!
But I think if you use beets to dye you get a nice, pretty shade of brown.
I just googled for it and found this page - http://www.pburch.net/drupal/?q=node/3
I went to some seminars on natural dyes several years ago. Don't remember a lot, but do remember that Earth Guild is a vendor with a lot of expertise in this area. (I bought several packets of dyestuffs from them - most of them are still in my craft room.)

After boiling beets, (I freeze the cooked beets) add about 1 tblsp of white vinegar to the beet water. You can dye 100% cotton. Most times it will not dye the same Red, but rather a brownish red. Wring out the material and then rinse it out w/cold water. I then hang it to dry. After it is dry I toss it in the dryer to help "set" the dye. You can also boil onions, do the same procedure as for the beets, but you will get a yellowish/brown dye. Have fun experimenting.

Thanks for the info. DH just left for the week to dirt bike leaving me, the cat and a studio waiting to create in. Going to finish my coffee and off to the studio to finish unpacking and cleaning it from our move in a year ago and then CREATING TIME!!!!!!!! I can't wait. He was feeling so bad as he was leaving as he knows how much I love to dirt bike that it made me feel bad as I was watching the clock saying to myself aren't you getting late.

Ha! My DH is coming home today after being gone for 5 days - he took vacation to go ride his tractor up in Michigan. I don't have any vacation left, boo hoo. But I did exactly what you're planning - Went down to the craft room! I made an apron. Didn't know if I'd get it done before I have to go to work in 20 minutes but I managed to finish it!
