For those who know me - it is never dull around the funny farm. As I was answering emails and waiting for dinner to finish I heard the sound of my mousetrap snapping down in the shop. Since it has been so hot here mice have decided the concret floor of my shop sure beats those hot barns. As I came down the stairs and headed toward the traps (I placed two next to the doors behind the trash can)I could see movement. Many a time the mouse is not died by the time I reach the trap so I moved the trash and let out a scream, which is something I rarely do. In one trap I have a well rounded field mouse but the other trap was moving toward me. A snake had been captured halfway down it's wiggly body and he was still trying to get to the mouse which now was in my hand. I picked up the hammer I keep next to the door and finished off the snake. After cleaning up the mess I had made I had to chuckle "Thank Goodness I did not have a customer in the shop, last time there was a spider on the floor and I had this lady scream for almost 5 minutes - I have no idea what my city folk customers would have done with these country guest"?
Well, back to dinner and then off to the computer. Have a great night and lets hope no more guests tonight!

Oh My Grace!! What is it with us Colorado girls and snakes??Do you know what kind of snake it was?? Almost all of my neighbors have had some sort of encounter with rattlers this year. Normally we don't see them like this. I hope you are spared from the horrid creatures up your way. Stay safe, Hugs, Lu

Hi Luzy - No my rattle snakes live in the rocks in my forest but since I was not expecting a snake in the trap I must say I took that hammer to it so there was nothing left. As my boys learned it is never nice to scare mom. I did have a mother bull snake and this could be a offspring. Normally I leave them alone because they help keep the rattle snakes away. I have a deal with mother nature "I let you be outside but your dead if you come inside".
I don't know about you but I am ready for fall!! Heat, bugs, snakes and way too dry for my taste. Stay well and keep a hammer by the door.

Sorry Grace, I am laughing at your escapades! I have done plenty of things like that. I don't like to kill things either, but if it is in my house, or after my critters, look out!! Marybeth, we too have that 22 handy, and a spotlight for the late night visitors!

I too have a rifle by the door and my spot light to blind those night guests but I have found my weapon of choice is a hammer and at odd times a pitch fork (That is a whole other funny story)
I last night spent the night on watch for our mountain lion who has been on the hunt. With heavy eye lids and dogs barking all night I think today is nap day. Last week it was a bear this week snakes and mountain lions - next week I think the Mother Ship will land and little green men will be greated by my hammer. Take up the welcome mat I need no more guests.

That's too funny!
Earlier this summer, we were at war with the rabbits and the chipmunks over whose garden we'd planted. I'm ok with 10% for the critters, but they were gobbling up everything in sight, not even giving the plants a chance.
We keep several weapons, from rifles to shotguns, and even a couple of handguns. Cindy is the best shot, and with all the landscaping and birdbaths, she was the "hunter of choice". I got so tickled at her out in the front yard in her "Dr Denton's" with her shotgun, I threatened to take her picture and post it on one of our many blogs... will probably still do it for our book.
Our policy here is if you want to visit and nibble just a little, that's ok. We feed wild birds and you're welcome to all the spilled seed, just don't steal from the feeders. Leave the plants (and whatever they bear) for the humans, leave the chickens, sheep and horses alone, and you'll not be bothered. Don't enter the house or the garage, you'll be trapped and killed with the most convenient method on hand.
For God's sake... don't try to scare us! That only makes us really angry and you will be punished with a very swift death!
