I was reading Alee's post, have decided maybe a hurt knee isn't the end of the world after all. My two year old lab Bella tore her rear cruciate ligament (actually it is the cranial ligament of her left rear stifle) that's just the nurse part of me interjecting there.....
It sounds simple, but,..... I can let her be a three legged lab or opt for a 2300. surgery called a TPLO, it's a bone osteotomy that will put her back to her pre-injured self.... any of you do this to your dog?
We're opting for it, but it's going to be a very long 8-12 week rehabilitation with a very busy two year old dog....... It is amazing what we will do for the creatures we love.....
but this is why................ jo "oh the places we will go"........

We spent over 5,000.00 on our dear lab when he was ill, they are just like my kids there is no limit to what I will spend to "fix" them. One of my best friends maxed out 3 credit cards to pay for heart surgery for her dog. At only two years of age Bella is well worth the expense and I am sure she will heal quickly. Gotta love a lab!!!

We've spent a ton of money on our dog and my horse when it was needed and that's because they weren't just animals, they were a part of the family.
My step-daughter faced a similar situation with her cat, although his injury was that first joint closest to the paw. They couldn't really afford it, but opted for the surgery. We decided to help out with the expense - it was, after all, our grand-cat. Charlie has recovered well (it was also a 10 - 12 week rehab) and is back to his old self - keeping the dogs in line and seeking out other ways to get into trouble.
I've learned that it takes as much time and energy to wish as it does to plan.

Jo,
My daughter had the same problem with her Springer Spaniel and another friend with her Husky. Both surgeries turned out very well. Both used a crate to keep them calmer. When they were not at home or too busy to really watch them they were crated. It solved the problem and did the job. I'd for sure try it.

Honestly if there came to be a huge expense with my dog I would probably drive home to Wyoming to have her treated. I have a good friend there that is a vet who would give me a break on the price. I would hate to contemplate putting Sky to sleep if we couldn't afford treatment.
We had a scare a few years ago. She was mad at me because I left for several weeks and so she ate some ceramic figurines that I had. She was pretty blocked up and was having bloody stools. We were worried that we couldn't afford surgery and that she might need it. Luckily she did end up passing all the ceramic bits on her own, but it certainly makes you consider paying for pet insurance!

Oh Good luck with your sweet Bella. I think you made the right choice. I just got a dose of reality when it comes to vet bills myself. Little Jack's rattlesnake bite set me back $1150.00! I couldn't stand to see him suffer, so I opted for the fastest/best treatment. So please keep us posted on Bella's progress. I wish you the best of luck, and I'll be praying for her. Our cat cost us $3600 in surgeries and hospital care (that's with an employee discount). She still died at the vet clinic, unable to survive the infection in her body. My DH paid that without even a complaint. It was his cat, his first pet he ever owned, he never had pets growing up so he picked her out by himself from the shelter about 2 months before we met. We had her cremated and he still gets sad looking at her urn on the mantel. I think he would have gladly paid more if she would have survived.

Jo, don't forget to use your healing techniques (if you need a refresher, let me know) You'll be surprised at what a difference it makes, right Luanne? also, if you need me to talk with your sweet baby let me know (no charge of course)

Hi Jo
I am so sorry to here about your lab. I will send all the prayers and good thoughts I can to you. It is so hard when our four legged loved one's are suffering. I know you will give her the best you can and the love you share with her makes the pain go away.
Also, I got your card and check - I thought only I did that kind of thing. Hugs to you and yours and know that you are in my prayers.

Good luck with the surgery and the healing. A teacher I work with had to have that same surgery done on his pup. She was also young and in good shape (the dog, not the teacher  ), and she came through with flying colors!
